Razer Modular Computer. Good, or bad?

The concept is great but putting into account the price of the upgrades being proprietary and looking for someone to make those upgrades readily available is a huge problem, which is why Razer dropped the project entirely.

It's a poor concept, and will only further the belief that PC's are a lot more expensive than their console equivalent.

It's really just Razer "Dumbing down" the modularity that already exists with Gaming PC's so it's more palatable for the non-techie market.

I think it's an interesting concept, and I actually like the aesthetics of it. The issues with concepts like this is breaking into the desktop market with them. We've been using the same type of setup for decades - since before I was born actually, which means that the PC market is pretty set in it's ways. It's going to be quite a challenge bringing a new form factor into play (I'm talking form factor like this, not different size motherboards), and while I don't think we'll be seeing it in the near future, I can certainly see things shifting from the traditional desktop setup that we have now to something "different" like this.

To do this right, we would need a company that would do what AMD is doing with Mantle, to keep it open source.  To allow other companies to also make these modular towers and stuff.  I know Razer would patent this, and all of the addons and components would have propriatary connections. 

 

If someone makes this it needs to be open and availible for everyone as thats the only way the industry will improve.  And I dont beileve the world is ready for this kind of thing, we have much to improve until this would be able to be mainstream in my opinion.
