Which laptop is better

Hello, Im thinking of purchasing a laptop for under $150 (not a chromebook) that can work for normal school stuff such as web browsing, I have found 2 laptops and i want to know which one is better.

2nd would be the best most likely, as the Celeron would be better than the atom. Although Im going to be honest, these are going to be a waste of money, where as a chromebook or trying to find an older used laptop will be better or as well as trying to save more

Web browsing can punish these systems easily, especially past having more than just one tab open, and its not going to be fun trying to watch a video for school on it.

Seriously, an older used thinkpad can probably blow either of these out of the water, and you still can upgrade it a bit down the line. (Add more ram, a small SSD etc)

We believe the first choice has an advertised error.

We've had two of them in already (as well as the EVOO/Gateway), and both of the Core Innovations laptops had Celeron N3350s. And while the EVOO has a Celeron N4020 which is marginally better, steer clear from both of these computers.

These are primarily Chromebooks running Windows 10. Neither the storage or the memory is expandable. And while these features work quite well with Chrome OS, Windows 10 tends to keep these poor machines constantly running in Virtual Memory (Pagefile) mode.

We originally called this the Win10/4GB/5400 plague, where Windows 10 running with 4GB of memory or less off using a 5400 RPM hard drive would cause the machine to be incredibly slow. Performance "is" slightly better with eMMC storage, but what we're finding here is that the eMMC module is being written to constantly, causing its premature failure.

If you're on a budget, we highly suggest that you look for older laptops on sites like Mercari, Offer Up, and Facebook Marketplace, that can be easily updated. Generally, you're looking for a laptop that has/or can be upgraded to 8GB and has a dual channel processor. Two 4GB 2Rx8 sticks of memory allow more bandwidth than one 8GB 1Rx16, a fact which is crippling a lot of new computers.

And a simple SSD upgrade, if possible, allows for phenomenally faster boot times and program load times, and makes what little VM activity "virtually" unnoticeable.

As a case in point, we took a 10-year-old Acer Aspire ONE 722 with a dual core AMD C-60, upgraded it to a 120GB SSD and a single stick of 8GB 2Rx8 memory (yes, AMD processors memory controllers are that good) and used it as a daily driver for a week. Surprisingly, it was quite functional. Unless we had a number of browser pages open, the PF was nearly nothing, and load times were acceptable.

We're not saying to go that old, but on the sites mentioned you can find laptops as recent as two years for acceptable pricing.

PM us if you need any suggestions for a budget laptop.

May we suggest Mint MATE as your starting point with Linux. It's light and fast, and many of our clients simply install it on a 3.0 USB flash drive instead of running a dual-boot operation.

This flash drive is not to be used for the "live" distro (you can use a 8GB drive for that), but a full installation! This setup often runs faster then most eMMCs that are out there.
