PSU gets really loud when SLI.

marviinn

My PSU gets really loud when i SLI my GTX 460's. Not in idle, but when launching a game.

Specs:

i5 2500k @ 4.2 Ghz.

2x Gigabyte GTX 460

8GB DDR3

Asus P8P67 Pro

Corsair TX 650

Fractal Design Define R3

I'm only overclocking the CPU and nothing else. I hear no whining sound, just a really loud fan from the PSU. But when i remove one card or disable SLI with both cards still connected, then launch games, it gets dead silent. Is the 2nd card really putting that much pressure on the PSU?

It's just putting load on it. Nothing unusual.

I understand this, but it gets unrealistically loud for only adding another card. It has gotten louder the last couple of weeks. I can hear the fan ramp up quite much even when idling the main menu in a game. But suddenly outputs no noise at all when disabling SLI.

I want to believe this but i do smell something fishy here.

I tried with one GPU and even with both GPU's but disabling SLI, after that i can't hear any noise at all from the PSU. Completely silent. I find this really strange.

If you truly think something isn't right try taking your psu case apart and spin the fan with your hand, see if it is hard to spin or not. If it is hard to spin then it is probably on its way our the door and needs to be replaced.

Thanks for all the replies guys. But i'm going to sell the GPU's and go for a beefier single-card setup instead. I have been VRAM limited in some heavy titles, so i am in need for an upgrade anyway.

If the PSU gets loud, it means that it's getting hot so you're drawing almost all the power it can supply.
