I have 3 Processors what's better?

I have 3 proccessors - All very OLD but was going to use to build a PC for my son what would be the best one to use.

 

 - Intel Core i5-2400 | Motherboard: Intel desktop Board

 - AMD Athlon x4 | Motherboard: Gigabyte F2a78

 - Intel Core i7-960 | Motherboard rampage extreme 3

The 960 is best with the 2400 closish behind and the athlon x4 is not even in the same realm as these 2 so don't even bother using it.

Now THAT is a sweeeeet combo @Cazzasim! I love those CPU's! And the Rampage board was a dream back in the day!

Sandy Bridge was awesome as well!

Rampage is cool but sadly that tiny little display it came with doesn't last long.

True... either way Rampage boards from that time period were absolutely FANTASTIC @jaslion.

Most half decent boards don't die over time :p. I have many old systems come and go functioning just fine on far below the level of those.

 

I do have a free system with 2x295x2's a i7 920 in a antec nine hundred with 24gb of ram and the rampage III extreme. Works like a charm still but totally useless :p.

Then 960 should overclock quite well too and the board is appropriate for that.

I'm running a 3930K at it still feels ULTRA modern to this day for most tasks including gaming @jaslion. Prob because X79 ran quad channel 

X79 is my all time favorite platform. It was waaay ahead of it's time and really hasn't gone extinct yet. Imo it easily has a couple of year ahead of it. If only they made new "X79 CPU's" ...

Here's my existing PC still going strong. The cable management and the dust is not optimal, I know, but it's going to sadly get replaced in about a month  

I've already built my new PC, but have put it back inside the case box, because I simply don't have enough time to enjoy setting everything up and would only be rushing the otherwise great process of setting up new gear

oh, and yes - that IS in fact a Corsair H100 1st gen. still going strong 10 years after I purchased it

It's intel you get 2 cpu gens at most and that is it on a board. The 3930k is still a nice cpu and with some ocing becomes basically a ryzen 2600x. Eventually it will meet it's end but that will be in a couple years time the earliest. The next cpu on the chopping block is the 2600k at stock and then probably all 8 thread i7's as the ps4 and xbox one fade out.

Mine has been OC'd to 4,5GHz forever now and games run great! I could prob. purchase a 1440p or 4K monitor with a decent GPU and there wouldn't be too big of a bottleneck. At 1080p it does start to show it's age a bit, however there's no way anyone'd say it's 10 years old.

And this is why I absolutely LOVE the X79 platform and Sandy Bridge-E CPU's. It's utterly mesmerizing how well they have held up over the past 10 years. It might sound a bit silly for me to say this, but my current PC has gotten me through so much of my life that I've actually become quite emotionally attached to the damn thing.

What saddens me is that I think we'll never see a platform as "future proof" as the 3930K on a nice X79 board was (considering the 3930K was a ~ $500 CPU and nice X79 boards cost ~ $250).. We must not forget that 10 years = ancient in the performance PC world.

In my opinion the 2600K is already at the edge of usefulness in 2021 - core/thread limitation and memory bandwidth limitation. Was a great CPU though and fantastically simple to OC the hell out of!

Got mine in early 2012, but they launched in late 2011. It's getting there

Keep in mind that the i7 960 lacks AVX, and some stuff might fail to work due to that (the 2400 does have it).

I can't get my MoBo to boot any drives - formatted for legacy bootable windows usb but its not having it just stuck on flashing curser  - any ideas??

How did you make your boot drives?

 

Try to install Ventoy on one and drop the iso on.

Thanks I was using Rufus to create a bootable USB MBR mode for windows 10 -> just wasn't liking it,

I sorted it by creating a bootable windows 7 -> installing this then upgrading to windows 10.

 

Ugh im sure there was an easier way but i made it.
