What xeon?

If it is literally just the same quad core ht xeon running at the same frequency as the i7 you are literally buying your i7 again but with a xeon name. So quite frankly tossing money away and gaining nothing.

So if your Ivy Bridge Core i7 runs everything fine, why would you want a Xeon? Surely if it really fulfills your needs, you wouldn't want to upgrade, right?

If we're honest the OP would end up taking an L since they'd be losing the iGPU on top of gaining absolutely nothing.

True that is disabled in those xeons. Another note is that they usually even run 100mhz slower in max frequency because reasons.

It's not an upgrade as well the best xeon on their platform is literally a i7 3770k but with the xeon branding.

3770k is fine as is, keep it and save up for something like 11400F, B560, and cheap set of 2*8GB 3000mhz RAM (should be 300$ for a whole set if you play your cards right)

You will MAYBE and this is a big MAYBE get a couple % better cpu performance if at all. So pretty much not even close to worth it. Especially since these cost a lot and were a later release I forgot about.

Well....

Do you consider the Ivy Bridge EP to be the same? Because I use a (granted, dual Xeon rig) 6core/12threaded E5-2643 v2 and it's got more cores, more threads and a boatload of more other options (more RAM support, ECC, etc)

Damn, I thought at the very least a Xeon would offer 6c/12t... Guess not on that particular platform.

The Xeon appears to have an extra 200MHz max boost on the 3770K... but defo not worth dumping money on.

Yeah, reread @jaslionrationale if thats your xeon upgrade idea. Its not worth while unless you wanna buy a whole server/workstation board (or hacky bios for your board) and really need ECC RIGHT NOW in which case i would just go for a B550 with CSM module and a used 3200G/Ryzen 5 3600.

I assume op is talking about xeons on their board and they were so yeah not worth.

These are consumer xeons. They were always just quad cores. Intel doesn't really do the xeon has more cores on their base consumer platforms.

The 3200g would be a downgrade for games due to losing the 4 extra threads so I do not recommend that.

You go with the workstation-class Ivy Bridge EP, and thata opens up a lot more options, but it's still Ivy Bridge (which I run just great, but I"m not much of a gamer, so FPS isn't important to me)

Xeon just means server use, it's not necessarily better than Core i.

Your motherboard doesnt support better CPUs either. If the CPU still performs ok to you, don't change it because any meaningful upgrade means new mobo and RAM on top of the CPU.

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1
