Splitting a monitor into virtual displays with fullscreen support.

So, long story short because of Nvidias stupid limitation of only allowing 4 displays i had an idea to replace my 3 1080p monitors with a 4k one thats roughly double the size. My plan is to split the monitor into quadrants and use it similarly to multiple displays.

The only problem is stuff like Youtube and games where setting it to fullscreen would actually be the whole screen instead of the 'virtual screen' area I set aside for it.

Most games support borderless window and thats fine, i assume there isnt a way to get full isolated fullscreen while not taking up the entire screen but if i could at least force the borderless window aera to a certain location on the screen that would work.

Does anyone know of any software that lets you create complete virtual monitors? I know theres plenty of software to split up the aero snap areas but ideally i want something that goes deeper and tells apps that 'fullscreen' is the area they are in rather than the entire monitor.

And sorry if this is the wrong section.

why no dark mode?

dont, if used for this reason.

by using windows and fullscreen.

But do what you want the most.

and yes that gif is nice :U

windows and displayfusion. (never used displayfusion or know much about it, also paid?)

power toys seems like it might be a thing too, fancy zones editor?

Microsoft Powertoys will also have some extra options for window snapping.
If i remember correctly you could set up zones, and having windows snap to those zones.

I tried DisplayFusion and while it does do the similar window splitting things to other programs it seems like nothing (including displayfusion) can trick app's fullscreen.

I am actually using Powertoys rn to split my vertical montior. It works for apps that I set to a certain area and leave but it doesn't support overriding the maximize button or the double click to fullscreen thing so I'll probably use either MaxTo or Displayfusion (I believe both are paid sadly)

Because it doesn't look like there's an ability to force games that want fullscreen/borderless window into a specific area, my new plan is to do something like this. Basically just leave the vertical montior for aida and discord while still allowing me to split the 4k one for anything that supports it.

This also frees up 1 more monitor spot in Nvidia's shit so I don't have to break everything to connect it to my VR headset or TV.

What about a 4K monitor that has 4-PBP support? LG 43” 4K UHD IPS USB-C HDR 10 Monitor (43UN700-B) | LG USA?

I believe it only works by accepting 4 inputs and tiling them which wouldn't work for my use case because of Nvidia's limit of 4 displays total, it runs into the same issue I have now.

You can also set different layouts per monitor, which is my favorite part. And create custom layouts. I have one for the main monitor that lets me move a small column to the left and bigger stuff to the right. A single zone on my smaller left monitor, and a vertical split for my portait mounted monitor on the right.

I also just checked and it will let you do more complicated layouts that are likely to cover what you want.

yeah, the problem with PowerToys is it doesn't override the double click to maximize or the maximize buttons which I use a lot.

Apart from that there's also the problem of finding a 4k 43-48" 120Hz display and because I have a 20 series card HDMI 2.1 isn't an option without an adapter.

There are a few DisplayPort monitors but they are quite expensive.

Finding a TV is absolute hell, idk how anyone looks for TVs. Finding any information is just a complete mess, especially when Samsung pulls some dumb shit by making their Q80T line go from 49-85" but only 55" and above are 120Hz even though on Samsung's site they all just say 120Hz because motion smoothing.

  • 1 year later...

The only software I was able to find so far that is capable of splitting a monitor into virtual displays with confined fullscreen support is iShadow Virtual Display Manager. However, I hate its profund lack of user-friendlyness when it comes to setting custom layouts, and as of this day it's impossible to edit such a custom layout once created (you have to start over from scratch everytime, even if you just want to make a minor change). But there are integrated already-made layouts avaible, so if those suit you or if you don't mind not being able to alter custom layouts then it could be for you.

Other than MS-PowerToys and DisplayFusion (which are both very cool), there is also MaxTo that is very user-friendly, but sadly it doesn't support confined fullscreen either...
