Airpod max can't play lossless apple music even when in wired mode

“Lossless audio is not supported on AirPods, any model,” an Apple spokesperson said by email. “AirPods Max wired listening mode accepts analog output sources only. AirPods Max currently does not support digital audio formats in wired mode.”

Apple tells The Verge that when you play a 24-bit / 48 kHz Apple Music lossless track from an iPhone into the AirPods Max using both the cable and Lightning dongle, the audio is converted to analog and then re-digitized to 24-bit / 48 kHz. That re-digitization step is the reason that Apple can’t say you’re hearing pure lossless audio; it’s not an identical match to the source.

The Apple Music spatial audio feature also announced today will work on the AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. So any songs that have those Dolby Atmos mixes are going to feel more immersive than their stereo counterparts. I think Apple suspects spatial audio will be a bigger deal for many customers than lossless quality

Apple also tells The Verge that the HomePod and HomePod mini speakers won’t support lossless audio — however, they will support spatial audio.

So basically nothing apple makes will support their lossless audio. I'm not sure why they have to redigitize the analog signal. It's true that lossless doesn't make a huge difference especially for audio equipment at this level but it's still funny.

That's actually so odd. Then wtf is the point of the airpods max? It's so sad too cause it's literally the best sounding thing Apple has produced. And is really legit sounding as good as closed backs in the sub $200 range. The whole product is kinda dumb to me like needing a case to turn off the thing. Now can't even play lossless. That's another point to one thing I like to say "if you care about music, you don't buy apple".

There aren't any wireless headphones that support lossless playback, only in wired. I dunno what the confusion is. 😆

Yeah it's stupid that even in wired they can't, but they aren't worth hearing regardless of source quality at that pricepoint.

LDAC is the closest thing to lossless you can get wirelessly, and it's still compressed.

well the wired part is the issue and the funny part to me is apple is upgrading their service to offer lossless but none of their products can play lossless

My confusion is why the airpods max gets somehow detected by the device and suppressed into only using lossy files in wired listening mode. Like why are you actively limiting your device?

I think Tim Apple is just trolling their fanbase 🤪

what its doing is the headphones is taking the analog signal converting it into digital and then converts it back to analog and i guess that alters the signal in some way so its not considered lossless
