Asus 3090 Strix Card Vertical?

Hi all... So I won the Graphics card lottery yesterday and my 3090 is on route (Asus 3090 Strix).

I currently run an air cooled  AMD 3970X  Threadripper with a 2080 mounted vertically.

Looking at the width of the 3090 it looks like it will be close to, if not in contact with the front panel of my case (Thermaltake View 37)

Any recommendations on a Case that will support this 2.9 slot card vertically?

i dont have any cases in mind BUT from what i can remember coolermaster(?) makes a kit that replaces the pcie slot covers for vertical gpu mounting, making it possible for your usecase while also improving performance because the gpu is not right up against the glass

The card needs air. So just because it doesn't touch the side doesn't meant it won't be a big problem. These cards need a LOT of FRESH air and having it that close to the glass will cause it to have to work very hard for a bit of air due to the huge restriction you put on it. As @ki8aras said there are kits that adapt the pcie slots and move it back a bit but still you need a fair bit of space to haveflow under the fans so they get a constant supply of fresh air and don't need to fight for it which a couple centimeters of depth is not at all good enough for.

Cablemod bracket gives you a few inches. Was enough for my 2.75 Asus card, but I don't think anyone's done updated tested with flow through coolers.

Thanks, I guess that is cheaper than a new case... The card would have lots of room on both the front and back and would have lots of clearance for the Massive threadripper air cooler tower.

  • 2 weeks later...

My card arrived and it is a monster.  At least 7mm taller than the 2080 it is replacing.  Before I order the Cablemod thing I figured I would just stick it in the vertical mount in the case to see just how bad it is.  My observations/experiences:

1) It conflicts with the "Big" Noctua cooling tower for the 3Gen Threadripper in its "centered" position.  at a 6mm offset it just barely fits

2) In the stock vertical mount the card clears the case cover, but it is close.. <20mm from the fan to the glass..  Too close?

3) I ran some stress tests and the OC Strix card clocked in at 110% of a "normal 3090" (whatever that is) and never went over 75C  (slowly climbed to 74C and then plateaued there) on a 30 minute stress test.

4) The air cooled Threadripper also got warm during the test getting up to 72C-73C range during the stress test... (Normally it idles  30C-45C and under load with the 2080 it never went over 69C.  The threadripper is not overclocked.

So I think I'm good... I don't game on this machine... It is mostly used for 3D work and video rendering... Even with a monster Solidworks project the fans on the GPU turn on...at slow speeds.. then cycle off.  I'm going to run it like this and see how it goes.
