Yes, but if you've never built a PC before, it might look easier than you find doing it.

The CPU cooler will need a new application of thermal paste, too.

Current PC spec. in my profile.
Can I realistically call myself a gamer, if I only play ONE, twenty year old game...?

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

I heard sometimes the Windows activation key can get triggered with hardware changes.  I'm more concerned of that.  I don't have my key.

Depends how many you change in how short a time...

That's only when you swap the motherboard, there's also ways to find your key before you swap it in case you're paranoid it will happen.

Almost no difference.

Multi core is of cource better a bit though..

Few percents in games. Only worth the upgrade if really cheap.

Problem is I get some stutters in a few games.  Not that often but noticeable.  Probably when the 4 cores get pegged in some bursts.

I could also use a new gpu but we all know the roadblock.

Say I have a 9100 and I wanted to put a 9600.  Is it as easy as swapping chips and not having to deal with OS reinstall and all that other crap?

As long as it's the same generation chip, usually no changes need to be made anywhere else. Just remember to completely clean off the old thermal paste, and re-apply thermal paste. If a chip is a different generation but supported, it may still require a firmware update to the motherboard.

Windows will not require re-activation in most cases, usually only triggering when the motherboard is changed.
