No, orientation doesn't matter. Even operation orientation doesn't matter, as long as it's parallel or perpendicular to the main spinning bearing. You don't want to run an HDD at a 45 degree angle, because it produces uneven stress to the main bearing.

 

In short - store an HDD as you like, just don't drop it.

would they store them in servers if it was bad? probably not
