Is it safe to store HDDs vertically?

If you put HDDs sitting on their sides and not on the bottom, can the plates become damaged or something? The HDDs are unplugged, it's just to save space.

Orientation doesn't matter for hdds. Doesn't matter the direction there sitting in

No, orientation doesn't matter. Even operation orientation doesn't matter, as long as it's parallel or perpendicular to the main spinning bearing. You don't want to run an HDD at a 45 degree angle, because it produces uneven stress to the main bearing.

 

In short - store an HDD as you like, just don't drop it.

would they store them in servers if it was bad? probably not
