oh i see

I'd still say go with the 780. Go watch some of Linus' and Luke's benchmarks. They're very well made :D

I asked almost the same question about a month ago. The advice was pretty similar to what you have gotten.

I ended up buying a GTX 780, because I have been using Nvidia Graphics Cards and like the driver and sotware.

I haven't regretted my purchase.

My advice is to buy the one that will look best in your case.

PC: Corsair Obsidian 750D. Asus Z77 Sabertooth. Intel Core i5 3570K. 8gb Corsair vengeance 1866mhz. Asus GTX 780 Direct CU II OC. Asus Xonar DGX 5.1. Sandisk Extreme 120gb SSD. 2 x Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB HD. Asus DVD drive. Corsair TX 650w PSU

I would go with the R9 290 considering it is the (toxic).  It is true that they run warm, but people over exaggerate it. Most of those comments are from people who have never owned one.

Both cards are great. Honestly you will be happy with either one.

Go watch the LTT video where they liquid cool the two cards and the 780 still runs cooler than the 290...

ONE SINGLE INSTANCE ISN'T FACT! <--sorry for caps.. but thats to RAM it home...

With so many variables to consider.....You should have multiple sources of information about ALL things you wanna know.

I agree, most people who say they have one, LOVE IT, like me... My HD7950 gets hotter than my Gigabyte 290, not just 1-2*c either.... So yeah... its NOTHING NEW to cool a performance part.

As said, its ALL about the cooler installed & both cards pushing extreme FPS (70-120+) @ 1080p, you'd not even notice which is which....

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

My 290 runs cooler (and quiter) than my friends 780 ti, it only matters what cooler you get with it.

I said 780.

Which is cooler than the 780Ti, so if his 290 is cooler than the TI, its even cooler again, against the 780.

Could you rephrase that? I did not get it :P

Actually now I re-read it, it doesnt make sense... disregard my post. I'll edit accordingly.

Very tired, was confused at my own brains inner workings...

A toxic version of the R9 290 does not exist. If you mean an R9 290 Tri-X from Sapphire then I'd recommend it if it costs similarly to the 780.

The GTX 780 is marginally faster than the R9 290 in 1080p, the memory bandwidth & 4GB of memory that the R9 290 has as an advantage will not really come to show until you're playing in 2560x1440 or using eyefinity.

The R9 290 supports Mantle which will give you a distinct performance advantage in any game built on the Frostbite 3 (EA games) Engine or the latest CryEngine (EA games & licensed to other publishers).

You can record gameplay using The R9 290's integrated video coding engine so I don't count Shadhow-play as an advantage.

Nvidia's software ecosystem is more newbie friendly than AMD's this can be both an advantage and a disadvantage based on your personal view and experience.

In my own mind of course, I've always had the inkling that when shit gets real.....or wrong for that matter :) - Non-Tweakers like to go Green, Tweakers can go both.

So many stigma's for AMD's drivers because of the 15 year history of their efforts has more complaints than winnings.( ie: non-tweakers)  Not because their crap, just people only remember/bring up the bad.

Its not that both companies don't have their own set of issues, its just when AMD's drivers screw up, it can take a bit more to get it back to normal operation.

^Huge generalization but, all IMO - Tweakers love AMD & Nvidia, Non-tweakers hate AMD (Rare cases of opposite)

I used to love both, but still build both, I do prefer AMD's ecosystem and programs associated with AMD. Plus when stuff goes wrong, I'm enthused about fixing it, not dreading it.

^Pretty off topic.. had to release this brainfart Or (being 7:44am) I'd forget it as easily as thinking it.

I'm definitely the same way when it comes to that.
