Help with old motherboard and new psu compatibility

Hi all, just wanted to close this up for anyone searching google in the future. I bought a 24 to 8 pin connector off amazon for about 10 bucks and it works perfectly.

When installing the new psu for my old dell optiplex system (the stock 290w couldn’t power the 980ti i bought user off ebay) I realized that the motherboard only took a 4 pin cpu and an 8 pin motherboard power input. My psu (evga 600w) has dual 4 pins for the cpu and a 20+4 pin for the motherboard. I tried seeing if parts of the cables would fit, and as seen in my attached images, one of the dual 4 pins fit for the cpu,C44F0673-5E43-402E-85A2-11EEF45E3B39.thumb.jpeg.51aa83e87ceef75316beaa5ff96f2540.jpeg and the last 8 pins of the 20+4 pin connector fit into the motherboard power. A345197D-F838-4998-9B1B-2FAC10AD8369.thumb.jpeg.431d69dcacbd608627083a7c772f52fe.jpegI haven’t plugged the psu in or turned anything on as I wanted to check it this solution would work, or if I would need to get an adapter. Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

I found a 24 to 8 pin adapter for old dell machines, but do you know if the cpu cable will work?

That will absolutely not work, and if anything would probably end up frying the board. You'd need one of these.

Looks like the black 8 pin on the right is labeled PWR. Can't really make out the P but the WR is clear.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Black plug is for an adapter that provides SATA power to whatever needs it.

Please do not turn that on! You need to use an adapter.
