I'm confused, IPS for gaming?

SamHF

I've been searching for a monitor for weeks now. I've finally magaed to come across one and I have a question. I wish to buy this monitor but it doesn't mention it has IPS on this site.

https://www.johnlewis.com/dell-s2721dgfa-quad-hd-gaming-monitor-27-inch-black/p5404011

However when I type the same monitor on Amazon it says it has IPS, I'm confused? It's the same monitor right?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-S2721DGFA-Compatible-DisplayPort-Adjustable/dp/B08NFBKNMY

Which panel is best for gaming. I've been searching so hard for a monitor and this Dell seemed to be the best for reviews.

I'd recommend the gigabyte q27g over that one. It's literally better than that monitor and cheaper. Not super well known but genuinely a great screen.

As far as I can find it is an ips monitor.

TN is the best for competitive gaming because of the fast response times (which eliminates motion blur), but the color quality and viewing angles and contrast ratio are so crap, leading to garbages looks. IPS has good response times and good color accuracy and viewing angles, making it a great panel type for just about everything, but keep in mind, it is slightly more expensive and has a bad contrast ratio. VA panels have slower response times, meaning the motion blur is pretty bad, and its viewing angles and color accuracy are mediocre. But the contrast ratio is excellent, making it great for movies.

my signiture was cool, but its a lie now

Got it, I'll go for IPS. I want to buy the Dell above but I heard the Asus TUF is better. Any idea what I should go with? I did consider the Alienware 240hz lol, but it takes over 1 month to ship and i cba waiting that long.

what are your thoughts on 240hz. if i was to love fps games and play them a lot, would it be worth the price? i've been on 1080p 144hz my entire life, is 240hz worth it?

problem is the alienware isn't in stock anywhere so if i was to buy it it's impossible it seems.

240hz would give you a competitive advantage, but the difference between 144hz and 240hz isn't a lot, so the upgrade might not be worth it.

you say competitive advantage then says it might not be worth it. Isn't every advantage in competitive games worth it? being competitive is about winning, you take everything you can to help you win 🙂

but where can i get the alienware 240hz which is in stock and not having to wait over 1 month for it to ship lol.

yes, competitive advantages are always worth it, but for some people, it isnt worth spending an extra $300 for that competitive advantage. and the alienware is in stock right now https://pcpartpicker.com/product/68qBD3/alienware-aw2521hf-245-1920x1080-240-hz-monitor-aw2521hf

will do. however back to my original question. These two below are the same, however the one from johnlewis (the site i want to buy from) doesn't mention IPS, but amazon says IPS. They are the same right?

awesome. i think i'll buy it, what are your thoughts?

or the other two options would be these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ViewSonic-XG270-Compatible-DisplayPort-Speakers/dp/B07VP9GS1Q

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Gaming-VG27AQ-Monitor-Adaptive-Sync/dp/B07VTPKCLS

really finding it hard to decide despite comparing them side by side

i would rather go for quality and performance over price and warranty. which one would that be?

thanks for your answers, much appreciated!

here  is the comparision, the Asus one will have better picture quality, but the response time is slightly better on the viewsonic, resulting in less motion blur. but the viewsonic does support g-sync

and it beats the dell i was about to buy, damnit. now i have to rethink again lol

the dell would be still good for my rtx 3070 right? its freesync but supports gsync?

I have the Dell 2721, it's great. Calibrates well, 165Hz, good for multi-use stuff.

165Hz is only available over DisplayPort, HDMI is limited to 120Hz, and I would recommend looking for one used. I bought mine off Ebay for about $300.
