Can I install 24 gigs of ram?

Hello,

 

I was wondering if I could purchase 3 sticks of ram (8 gb each) of this https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-1x8GB-PC4-25600-Optimized/dp/B08D6LKYR5/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=corsair+vengeance+lpx+8gb+3200&qid=1618501395&s=electronics&sr=1-3 and put it in with my motherboard in a dual channel and single channel configuration, or buy two 4gb sticks of ram and two 8 gb sticks of ram for both dual channel. Will it work? which configuration is better? Could you include how to install it? thanks.

No, it doesn't.

If your CPU only supports dual channel RAM, even if you have 20 billion RAM sticks, it will still run in dual channel.

RAM channel count limit is dependent on the CPU, not the number of RAM sticks you have.

why though? do you need 24gb of ram?

you can use 3x8, 2x8 will run in dual channel and the other stick will run in single channel. but you might have some instability when setting the xmp profile.

its because my 16 gb pc is running at 90 percent due to the intensive workloads I do. I also like to keep a lot of tabs open, and I thought 32 gb is overkill so I  want something in between. how about if I buy 2x4 gb ram sticks and 2x8 for a total of 24 gigs of ram, but they can run dual channel?

Flex mode seems fine in theory but every time I see someone post about having problems with this configuration going into native dual channel seems to solve their problems.

 

I'd recommend just doing normal equal size ram per channel

yes, that's an option, but at that point you might as well go for the full 4x8. the price difference between 2x4 and 2x8 is quite small.

On AMD yes but one the dual-channel RAM is used up the slower single channel will be used and can cause slodowns, its named Asyncronous dual-channel mode.

Yeah, I was about to say that before I saw your post. 4 slots on the motherboard doesn't mean quad channel. 8 slots is quad channel and that is high end cpus like threadripper and whatnot. Not consumer cpus.

Also not true. RAM slot count is also not determinable by slot count. There are dual channel boards with 2 slots, dual channel boards with 4 slots, quad channel boards with 4 slots, quad channel boards with 8 slots, etc.

True, I didn't explain the full picture. All 8 slots are quad channel, but not all quad channels are 8 slot.

Why do you want to do this? Just go up to 32gb(4x8, or 2x16) or go down to 16gb(4x4, 2x8).

No it won't. Most mainstream motherboards only have up to dual channel support. If you have 4 sticks of memory two of them will be in channel 1 and two will be in channel 2.

More ranks better either way, you get dual-rank splitt on 2 channels.
