i would say 2 780Ti's. The performance gain you get with each new card added to Sli decreases. So 780ti being the more powerful on its on, I would assume that two would outperform the 3 780s and be a better deal/bang for your buck.

2 780ti's as 3 way sli doesnt have very good scalling so your better of with just 2 way.

3 way SLI isnt like a 33% performance increase from going to 2 way to 3 way, so go with 2 ti's

I wouldn't recommend either unless you are made of money.

2 780Ti's would out perform 3 780's, but why are you going with SLI? 2 780Ti's is alot of money, not gonna lie...

Buy a 780ti, then if you want more power add another when its cheaper or something. Or just upgrade to new tech.

Well you need a car to function in society (unless you are an awesome biker or you live near your place of work) whereas dual GK110 GPUs are not really necessary for anything except serious gaming. I am not saying having 1500 dollars makes you rich but spending 1.5k on GPUs is a pretty excessive.

Yeah but it's pretty unnecessary to buy them.

many things are unnecessary to buy, but people who have lots of money dont need to worry about 'is it necessary?'

Yeah 2 780tis like everyone else is saying. If you look at an SLI curve it starts to flatten out once you get more than 2 cards. Not worth going more than 2 unless YOU MUST have better. But it's not much better!
