Is it worth $80?

I was thinking of getting a R5 3600, then the 5600x caught my eye. As of now, would it make sense to spend the $80 on he 5600x or save the $80 and get the 3600? Ill be pairing it with the 3060ti (if I can get one) and 16gb of ram

I would 100% advise towards the 5600 as it has better performance

But how much do you need to spend on a 6 core processor to receive an optimal gaming experience? We’ve seen how much faster the 5600X is than the 3600 in our review, 24% faster on average at 1080p with an RTX 3090,

I think it would depend on the rest of your system - if that $80 can go towards getting a better gpu or more ram or more storage or something that would benefit you in some other situation, it might be a tough choice. Yes, the 5600X is easily one of the best CPUs for gaming, but unless you're pairing it with a beefy gpu at a lower resolution or playing super CPU demanding games, you won't get the full performance out of it. Speaking of the 3600, if you are considering a 3600 in the current market, I suggest you look at a 10400F instead, paired with a cheapo B560 motherboard (since you're unlikely to upgrade to Rocket Lake). Until a $200 Zen 3 part surfaces the 10400F is the best value you can get right now since it's almost always under $150 ($130 at micro center, plus $20 off with a mobo, what a catch!)

Ultimately it's up to you. I might get some flak for suggesting intel when zen 3 is simply so damn good, but honestly if you can save some money and net a better gpu, I'd say that's absolutely worthwhile.

Daily Driver: Asus ROG Flow X13 - 5900HS/3050 Ti

Primary Desktop: NCase M1 - 5800X3D/RX 6950XT

Travel PC: Fractal Terra - 5800X/RTX 3060 Ti

I have too many computers. List here.

For the GPU, I was planning on going with the 3060ti if I can get one

I doubt you'd see the performance bump going from 3600/10400F to 5600X unless you're doing other cpu bound tasks in your spare time. For gaming only, 10400f - and see if you can squeeze in a 3070 from the money you save.

So you would suggest a 3600 +3060ti OR 5600x + 3070? Or is the 3070 the better card overall?

no no not at all. Even with a 3070 the 10400/3600 will be plenty. You'll only experience severe bottlenecking with a 3080 and above class GPU.

Given the budget, you are most likely going to be choosing between a 5600x/3060 build or a 3600/3070 build. If this is the case, I recommend the latter. I brought up intel because a 10400F with a compatible motherboard will be less expensive than a 3600 with a B450/B500 board.

I built my AMD rig in November, and settled with the 3600XT for the same price as the vanilla because I could not get the 5600X until just a couple of weeks ago.. I got one of four in stock at the time.. honestly.. its pretty noticeable in day to day stuff. I think my XT is really good, but Zen 3 is what AM4 should have been imo. I still have my XT.. its good enough for me to build a family rig out of :D

I swear they made that XT for just a few months lol..

If you have the cash.. sure go for it. But if things are thin and that cash could be used elsewhere.. don't feel bad about "just" a 3600.

Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC @ 3045/1495 | WD SN850, SN850X
Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | Fractal Torrent Compact, 2x TL-B14

3060 series.

Either will make a GPU bound scenario at respected settings.

The 5600 makes sense if you Lower settings for Framerates (Apex/COD on Low settings) where the 5600x can stretch the GPUs legs further on than the 3600 can.

It still may not be huge, but probably worth the $80 if you DO lower settings and expect best FPS for your chosen settings.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I have the following systems at home

mine - R5 5600x - 3070 FE - play 1440p

sons - R5 3600 - 3060ti FE - play 1080p

the 5600x has better single core performance so better for games

but you cant go wrong with either

The 10400F only makes sense if you are buying a Z490 board, and that will add to the cost. If you run it on a B460/H470 board then you are losing performance. In that scenario even an R3 3300X would be faster.

b560 is cheap and gets you XMP on your memory. No need to go for a pricey Z series board on an non K sku

The Ram will be limited to 2666MHz if you go with the i5 10400F. You would need an i5 11400F to get 3200MHz. Also a lot of the non 'Z' chipsets boards tend to have pretty poor VRM's so it will limit cpu upgrades in the future.

you are unlikely to upgrade to anything on rocket lake if you have a 10400F. Also, B560 allows for memory overclocking - the rated speed on the processor is just that, a rated speed. My 8700k is also rated for 2666 but it will take 4000mhz dimms without issue.

If you needed more cores in the future then you have the 10850K/10900/K. You should always try and have an upgrade path even if you don't end up using it.

The Ram speed is a bit confusing then, as Gigabyte lists the 10th gen i5 as 2666MHz on their website for the B560 Aorus Pro AX. I am guessing that they haven't finished the page as even the 11th gen is listed as 3200MHz which isn't correct. The QVL lists up to 4200MHz.

As for overall cost the op would have to check local prices to see.

that was the thought process for me when I bought a z390 board. Look where that landed me 😛

I still maintain that a 10400F is the best option for cheap gaming CPU that doesn't sacrifice a whole lot, though if a ryzen combo costs less I think that is the way to go. I wouldn't wish a 10900K on my worst enemy.

Thanks for the input. I am fine with buying the 5600x, I am one of those people that if they can save some money for the same outcome, why not save the money. From this thread and other research,  I have come to the conclusion that the 5600x wouldn't be wasting money. So I am getting more and more confident in my build the more I get conformations that teh setup is good and won't bottle neck. The only thing next to do is find a 3060ti in stock.
