Anyone here interested in Mantle vs DX on a low end PC in Theif, BF4 & Star Swarm?

I'm doing some AMD Mantle benchmarking on my PC (low end PC when compaired to the US/CA/DE/GB standard).

If there are a lot of interested people here on the forum, I could share the results here in a new thread (in a highly professional manner, not some random mumbo-jumbo), if there aren't I will not bother (time is precious, have other things to do like earning for a living).

In short, the PC is a Phenom II 945 with 5GB of DDR2 ram and a Radeon HD 7770 1GB with Windows 8.1 x64, and the games/benchmarks I am using are Thief (2014), Battlefield 4 and Star Swarm. The results are low/avg/max framerate and some frame time / latency graphs.

I'm more interested in the DirectX one because I have no interest in getting any AMD video card (hope DX12 is going to be groundbreaking)

i'm more interested in tinkering with a game engine that has Mantle support (next-gen CryEngine), which is why this thread caught my eye. judging from the previews, it looks to me like there could be driver and/or program optimization needed, particularly with Battlefield 4 (ESPECIALLY with Battlefield 4). i'm not surprised to see that at higher settings, Mantle does little to alleviate the slowdown seen in all three situations.

 

still, i'd give it time to mature and develop. the first generation of anything is bound to have some amount of issues. can't wait to see more from this thread!

You need to download it and read in Word or some other program that can open doc files. Preview in MediaFire does not load the images correctly.

huh, interesting; what i get in the download is the same as what i see in the preview. maybe it's because i'm using LibreOffice?

It's not that shocking.

 

I'm running Windows 7 on my way old overclocked Athlon x2 4400+ (Dualcore @2.8 Ghz + 5870), also have an older Single core 3500+ running Windows 8.1, was curious how bad it would be.

Both have SSD's and 4GB of Ram.

Its not bad at all, as long as the system has enough system ram (4Gb+) & an SSD to make up for it.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

In the latest patch Dice adresses some of the issues with Mantle.

Here is what they wrote in the patch log:

 

MANTLE 

-Mantle now requires Catalyst 14.2 or later drivers. 

-Fixed multiple crashes. 

-Fixed memory leak when switching between windowed and full screen. 

-Optimized memory management which can reduce amount of performance stalls when video memory is overcommitted. 

-Improved performance when vsync is used. 

-Fixed bug with offset mouse cursor when using full screen and horizontal windows taskbar. 

-Multi-GPU: Added initial support for frame pacing for smoother frame rate in full screen mode, enabled by default. Can be disabled in console / User.cfg with “RenderDevice.FramePacingMethod 0”. 

-Multi-GPU: Fixed black screen when starting on machine with multiple GPUs where the weakest GPU has the display attached to it. 

-Multi-GPU: Fixed intermittent crash when switching between windowed and full screen mode when having multiple GPUs 

 

I will repeat the testing in Battlefield 4 as soon as I can to see did the patch help.

Well I got a 260 % increase in average framerate with a x3 720be and a stock 7850 in Star Swarm. It doesn't really surprise me because I get around 50% GPU utilization in BF3 @ Ultra and 64 players  :D
