i need a software that can encrypt my drive with a password... buuut i need the password only to consist of 4 or 5 characters. the snag with bitlocker is it requires an 8 character password at minimum.

is there a software that can encrypt my drive with at least a 5 character password?

thanks in advance!

It is pointless to encrypt a drive with such a short password.

Any 5 digit or less password, regardless of how varied or random the characters are, is extremely easy to brute force. The encryption's only as strong as the password you use to encrypt it so there'd really be no point in even encrypting it.

well yeah it's easier to brute force than an 8 character password i guess. but im intending to use a password that my friends or family cannot guess. (one that i can always remember of course)

so i dont really mind the risk of it.

Use a passphrase? Use like 4 or 5 words. Easy to remember, super hard to crack(assuming they don't know the works)

Bitlocker lets you use a tmp + a pin thats 4 characters, and the tpm makes it pretty hard to bruteforce.

But you can crack a 5 character passwor on a gpu lin like a minute, so won't stop someone who's trying.

wow! i'll be in trouble if i lose the portable drive, then.

but still i'd like to use a short password 😁

Use windows passphrase or login pin, if you are afraid that they will be able to get access to the drive then 5 letter encryption won't do anything to protect your data

Store the password or recovery key in anouther location? Like on your phone, or printed and hidden.

You really don't want a short password, they disable that for a reason.

Veracrypt is an option then, but I don't know if they have a required password complexity/length.

With Bitlocker, passwords have to be 8 characters or longer. You can't configure it to be any less than that, even through group policy.

Veracrypt will be fine. The average person will never crack a 5 digit password.

thanks guys. i just installed veracrypt and took a look at their beginner's tutorial. this should work!

btw, is there a risk of OS corruption just by installing it? or does it only occur when u work with partitions and files through it?
