Taking time off after graduating from university?

Hi,

 

I'm writing this here in the event that there are people here with similar experiences or knowledge.

 

I'm about to graduate with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering but have not yet been able to secure a job. To be honest, all the workload from university has made it quite difficult to focus on making good applications and also I do believe that this year there have been less opportunities due to the pandemic, especially at companies that I was looking forward to applying to. It just feels like I'm just settling for whatever's available instead of really being able to choose the sector/position that I want to get into.

 

My question is if it would be looked down upon by employers if I candidate waited a year to apply for the next round of graduate schemes? I feel like there probably will be more options to choose from post-pandemic (hopefully 'post-' by then), I will also be able to dedicate more time to each application and ultimately have a clearer idea of what sector to go into.

 

If anyone has any experience effectively taking a year off after university and still landing a good position afterwards, or even finding new interests or starting a business etc I'd like to hear from you. 
This is in the UK btw but should apply elsewhere.

Yes.

Yes it would be.

You can take a few months and give the excuse that you had trouble finding a job, especially right now with the pandemic.

But a whole year (maybe more)? You will likely be asked "what were you doing during that time".

You will need to explain that you were wasting your time by taking the year off "just 'cause", all while actively forgetting a lot of what you had learned during that time since you're not actively making use of it...

 

Now, you don't have to say that. You could say you were waiting for more offers to show up, all while perfecting your skills one way or another... But to do that, you need to learn how to sell yourself, if you don't already know how. But you mention needing to dedicate more time to each application, so I'm assuming you're not quite there? 

 

Or, they could simply not ask you that. Had a few like that. But they typically do.  Even more so if it's very obvious on your resume.

If you're planning on doing a passion project or something, which directly involve some of the stuff you've learned, you could put that in for the missed year. Past experience doesn't absolutely need to be a paid job. Charity work and stuff you do for yourself can also be included if you word it out properly and is directly linked to the skills you've developed for the job.

 

 

Settling for a company you weren't interested in is perfectly fine for a beginner job. Just work there for a while and when the opportunity arise, move on elsewhere. This is seen a lot better in the eyes of potential employers than someone "waiting" for a job that may never come.

You aren't going to land your dream job or probably anything close to it first thing out of college. I would settle with the one you like the most and build up a savings plus work experience. After you get some years on your resume you'll be able to move around much easier, have more leverage, and access to the jobs you actually want.

Depends. 

 

You can almost guarantee that you will be asked about why you deferred your application and it will boil down to your answer as to how the hiring manager would feel about it. I get that decent applications take time and I will be honest the whole graduate application system for most companies is utter bullshit, but I would not lead with that when questioned - its very negative and raises questions about how you prioritise, time manage and deal with 'failure'.  

 

In a way I almost wouldn't care what you actually did during that year, more your attitude towards it. I would of course prefer if you hadn't spent the year lounging around smoking pot but even that isn't a killer. As someone who has interviewed more (UK) engineering graduates than I care to mention I am more interested in the following: 

 

1) You care about engineering and want to do it. The world of work is very very different to university, especially for a fresh graduate, and you will need a lot of help, support and mentorship. An engineering degree is a highly versatile degree I would like to know that you aren't going to bail after a year for a job in finance because it wasn't what you thought. (From a personal stand point if you do that - good on you, no one should do a job they hate. From a company/hiring standpoint that's a real ball ache.)  

 

2) That you are a good engineer. I don't mean grades or how well you can do sums or how in depth you understand a certain technique or theorem. Everyone can do that. That's not special. The 20 people in the interview room behind you can also do that. What I am interested in is how you approach a problem - can you apply multiple techniques/theories to a task? How do you go about selecting your approach? Is there a solid basis to your thinking? How do you prioritise? Are you able to see different approaches/angles and constraints that could hinder you or help you? If I give you a technical question in an interview I probably don't expect you to be right, I expect you to fail - but I want to know how you fail.      

 

3) How much of a prick are you? This sounds harsh, but with any job interview I want to get a feel of your personality and understand how you will mesh with and improve my team. Graduates tend not to lack confidence (even when they think they do) or if they do have a tendency to horribly overcompensate because that's what they think people want to see. That's not the case - I want someone that will learn well, knuckle down and be productive, isn't scared of a days work and isn't in real danger of disappearing up their own backside. If they have cool stories from the year they spent bumming around Jamaica then that's a bonus. (From a practical stand point look over some management theory and recognise your self in a few of the more notable team models (Belbin etc.) that will pick out your strengths/weaknesses, that really helps in answering some of the questions designed to draw this information out. Oh - and don't over bullshit or spin things too much - we can tell. We can really tell.)       

 

When asked why you skipped a year I would expect a well rounded answer to cover at least two of the 3 points above and ultimately explain why you didn't or couldn't get a job the first time round. As an interviewer I know that this isn't your dream job, you will leave. But I want you to leave a competent engineer and a productive member of a team and  you need to show that you will let me help you achieve that. If you can make my life easier along the way as a safe pair of hands and turn out quality work then its all gravy.   

 

If what you did during that year has direct work experience then that's great. Any work experience is good - knowing you can be trusted to clock on on time and can take the drudgery that comes with any job is a bonus. If you've gone off to do something wild and try something completely different then that's fine, but I would need to be sure that you were serious about the job I'm interviewing you for.

As others have said, yes, employers will look down on you for "taking a year off", because there will be a large unexplained gap in your experience.

 

Also, you'll find that it's easier to get a job if you already have a job, so waiting for "that perfect job" is somewhat counter-intuitive.

 

My suggestion is to take what you can get now, and just keep looking.

 

Imagine this:

You decide to take a year off, and apply next year with the next class of graduates. You're more or less on even footing with those graduates (or at a slight disadvantage, if you cannot adequately explain the 1-year gap between graduating and applying).

 

Or

 

You apply for less desirable jobs now (ideally they're in your field, or at least somewhat related), then in one year, you apply for the "good jobs" with the next graduating class. Now you have a year of job experience, and you're better qualified than all the fresh grads. You have an advantage against the other applicants.

 

Now on the other hand, if you develop a recurring history of constantly jumping between jobs (particularly in short periods), this will also be a red flag. But doing it once or twice won't be too big of an issue.

You might be like me and have no choice but to wait until PhD application is looked over, so it’s 2 months off anyway. Might be the same for other pathways.

@Cy-Fy First off, if you have a year between when you graduated and the date you are applying, a lot of ATS (Applicant tracking systems) will kick you out just for that. ATS are the reason most companies don't get good applicants; the people in HR/recruiting over-tune the ATS and it kicks out a LOT of perfectly good applicants. That is why networking / knowing people is so important; if the hiring manager knows your name, they can ask HR "hey, can you check for Cy-Fy's resume in the ATS?" and the HR person can manually fish it out of the rejected queue. Happens all.the.time. Seriously, getting a job is more about writing a resume that beats the ATS than anything else.

 

Now, once you're in the room with the person, and they ask about the year gap, your answer will have a huge influence on what happens next. If you say you were burned out and you spent your days playing WoW and drinking beer, they're really not going to care you exist. If you spent your year volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and did load/structural analysis on the houses that you built just to keep your skills sharp (bring some of that in) then they will see some glimmer that you aren't a waste of time.

 

If you spend that year traveling, they'll see you as unreliable / spotty. If you spend that year working on something related to your specialty (turbine blade design? Cranes? Etc) then they'll be interested in hearing about that. Did you build a 2 ton lift crane out of junk you found on craigslist, then sell it to a local car shop/farmer? Did you join a local makerspace and learn how to CNC machine a turbine disk for a mini turbine you built?

 

What they care about is that your personal hobbies line up with your work. That you got your degree because it's what you enjoy doing, not because it pays the bills. If that isn't the case, that's totally fine. Just don't tell them that. Make them *think* your hobbies are your degree, at least for the first 3-6 months. After that you can drop the lie. Plenty of good computer (my specialty) people have sports as hobbies; but when you hire them they *all* talk about their tech interests first, and their sports interests as things that 'fill the time' even though their sports interests are their main focus and tech is something they put maybe 1-2 hrs a week into.

 

Everyone lies in job interviews. You, the interviewer, the company, HR, etc. Everyone. What you have to make peace with is lying where it doesn't matter, and being honest where it does, and that, frustratingly, varies person to person; and job to job.
