Motherboard only works when I bend it

LeonandElite

I have an Asus A68hm-plus motherboard and it only seems to work when I bend it upwards in a certain corner. This never used to be like this until recently, what do you reckon could be the cause?

A broken trace or loose solder point that makes contact when bent in a certain way.

It probably got bent over time due to a bad mount of the cooler or standoffs and now it's so warped that without having the warping applied it does not function anymore as traces got too stretched or components no longer make contact.

Do you want me to show you the back of the motherboard?

Would I be better off buying a new motherboard then 🙂

Probably but then again this is a super old platform that has always had low end apu's/cpu's so if it's worth it is another big question.

I know this probably sounds stupid but for now could I just put it in the oven for a few minutes to possibly re-allign the solder?

You could and HOPE it's a solder joint that is the issue and not a trace. I do not recommend the oven trick as it's a very wonky "solution".

Is this your primary computer? A68 is incredibly outdated, so if you have the money - yes.

Ffs isn't this the one where he puts his GPU in an oven? Don't do this.

Fair enough, maybe just get one of the cheaper B550 boards instead, like the Asrock Pro4.

If you're pretty strapped for cash, Intel is a better deal at low prices. At Micro Center in-store you can get an i3 10100F and a motherboard for a total of $110. Pretty good when it's faster than a Ryzen 3100, and that CPU alone costs $110
