I've only ever had machines with a single storage device (which of course just HAD to be 1TB HDDs), but the new PC that I want has a 1TB HDD and a 512GB SSD, and I wanted to know how that worked. Do I have to install things to a specific one of the drives? Will having an SSD decrease load times even if I still have the HDD? Anything I need to know before going into SSDs?

Thank you in advance!

Install the OS to the SSD, and applications/games that take a long time to load.

Install everything else (and your prized data) to the HDD

Windows will see the drives as two different ones, typically C and D.

How can I tell which one is which and how do install things to a specific one?

I assume the drives are of different sizes, if all else fails, unplug the HDD, and then when you install Windows, it'll only have 1 drive to install to

You'll have multiple drives with different drive letters, 2 in your case.

You can put your stuff wherever you want, how specifically - it depends on specific applications, for example in steam you can just create second library folder and you'll have to choose on each install.

Performance will obviously depend on where specific thing you are using is installed. So if your os is on ssd, it'll work fast, if you install a game on hdd it'll be slow.

You can also 'hot swap' any drives *except* the OS drive.

*hot swap, but you you still have to turn off your PC while swapping...

depends on the game - - and also some games *need* to be installed on ssd or they'll either lag like crazy or don't work at all, specifically most CAPCOM games...

that's why I generally don't install any games on ssd, it's specifically reserved for certain Capcom games, or games with similar behavior.
