550W PSU with Ryzen 5600x and RTX 3070?

sevenpott

So I just upgraded some parts of my existing build and the configuration now looks like this:

MB: B550-A PRO MSI
GPU: RTX 3070 Gigabyte Gaming OC
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x
RAM: 2x8gb DDR4 LPX Vengeance 3200Mhz
SD: NVMe  Samsung 970 evo plus
PSU: EVGA Supernova 550G2 80 plus Gold

As its my first desktop I build by my self I was wondering if my existing PSU will be enough and safe since I heard that RTX 3000 series have power spikes. Thanks in advance

I'd really go with at least 700w, though 600 should be fine. 700w leaves room for OC and plenty of room for power spikes

CPU + GPU + 50w.

Let say cpu is 100w, and gpu is 300w full, that is only 450w.

Yes, a 550w gold should be fine.

Most likely works fine and if not, you can always buy a new psu. It should have 2x cables for gpu pcie with built-in caps so at least test it.

Yes I would test with the existing PSU and if i see anything suspicious I will upgrade. So you guys think I shouldnt be afraid of bricking something? (cables are ok as I already run the setup with the RTX 3070 ok on Ryzen 5 1600, the new upgrades I will add later today are the Ram sticks the MB and the CPU). And ofcourse I will leave everything on stock for now.

with a ryzen 5, the recommended power supply is 550W or 650W

That's a dangerous assessment, you cannot suggest someone based on cpu classification.

CPU classification can change overtime. Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 can have the same power requirements.

What you should especially measure the GPU power draw as it can be the biggest one.

Ryzen 5 with a 3090 might not be enough with 550w.

If the protections are fine, you won't be bricking anything. Hopefully your EVGA G2 still has properly working protections. By the way, a 5600X and a 3070 should not consume more than 400W.

Yes, a 550w gold should be fine.

But depends how much overclocking 'costs' in term of wattage... not sure about that.

heres power consumption of my system similar to OP's after running superposition 1080p Extreme, at default clocks...

362w ~

(and I know my gpu draws 270, up to 300w all by itself lol)

I ran a 3700X and a 2080 on a Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W. Should be about the same draw on a 5600x and a 3070. Cutting it somewhat close though.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.
