UK to German customs

Hi,

 

I shipped a motherboard to be fixed to Germany from UK.

 

I was just charged to pay duties and vat and whatnot to have it fixed.

 

I thought I don't have to since it's not my choice where the warranty centre is?

 

UK Customs say that if it's for warranty purposes there is no costs as long as it's stated on the box.

 

Anyone from Germany who could confirm this?

Sounds like Brexit being unhelpful, see if EVGA is willing to bear the cost I suppose.

You'll probably find that since the new import and VAT regulations since Brexit came into place, it got caught up in some confusion. 

 

Only real choice is to contact the warranty centre to see if they can get it sorted out.

PS I recently bought some cheap stuff from the UK via Amazon and didn't need to pay any import duties, it was aquarium stuff.

I can buy this mobo from US with import fees for £350.

 

So far I paid £30 shipping, and I most likely will have to pay £60 import fees (and let's assume same thing on the way back) so total of £150. That's almost half of the value to get it fixed.

 

This means you can't have a free repair any more, because nothing is hosted in the UK.

I guess that's just the way it is for non-US and non-EU countries without a local service center.

the way Brexit has been done i think the customs/borders etc are all over the place

 

Wasn't the Dutch taking away lorry drivers sandwiches as it had meat ?

I know this won't help you for this, but Gigabyte has a service centre in the UK.

The key questions here are, why didn't you go through vendor? Usually in EU vendors handle warranties while in US they are done directly. The vendor probably would have known if there was extra charges for shipping it to be repaired. Another thing is the shipping service being used. Couriers are more expensive, but they also have greater knowledge on what the extra costs might be, and how to get them lowered based on a fact that you are importing for warranty service, not for use or re-sales.
