Hi i have a couple of questions about a DIY NAS..

I´m using a legacy PC for the build.. with an ASROCK DUAL SATA2 Mobo

So

Its safe to install a NAS OS like FreeNAS or similar into a basic USB pen drive?

If this thumb drive dies, all my data its lost ? (not the config and ths OS files but the images, docs etc)

If i create a RAID, via the Nas OS, and for any raison i broke my config or the USB drive go away... can i bring back the raid or everything its lost..

A Raid PCI Card works aside of the NAS OS

Thanks in advance

* USB drives die from constant read-writes not recommended.

* If this dies data is not lost

* If you format the OS data in the raid remains intact

* A pcie card is needed only if your motherboard does not have enough sata ports

Any card from a respectable brand will work, but to be 1000% sure you should check with the compatibility list of FreeNas and TrueNas

Id probalby get a lsi hba, something like a dell h200, lsi 9201-8i or m1015. Pretty cheap(like 40 bucks on ebay), supports 8 dirves(or more with expanders).
