Hi!

I'm looking for a GPU to buy right now for at most $400 USD. Preferably from Amazon or Newegg. Micro Center is also acceptable. The GPU also has to be available to buy, so probably not a 3000 series. It will be running Minecraft: Java Edition, Fortnight, and a small amount of COD. The person that the GPU is for is coming from a console, so he will not be used to anything over 60 FPS. I have been looking at some GTX 1650/1650SUPER/1660 models. But those keep going in and out of stock. Thanks for any help!

for $400 the best you can get right now is a 1660 new

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CnYLrH/asus-geforce-gtx-1660-6-gb-phoenix-oc-video-card-ph-gtx1660-o6g

but it's not a great value, you can get a used GTX 1070 or 980 TI for less money and it's better performance. New really isn't the way to go right now.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Jesus Christ the new GPU market is fucked. Best you can do is a $380 GTX 1660 from ASUS, their shittiest model, from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PHWBHHX?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

Yeah, the GPU market totally sucks. I will look into those models. How is the cooling potential? One fan cooler design?

I don't know if I would recommend that, even if there's nothing else available. That's one of those 'what were their engineers thinking' cards. It's marketed as "overclocked" when the cooler can't even handle the card at stock. It runs a dinky little fan (which is apparently pretty loud), and it's constantly stuck in a power-limiting mode.

I know it's $420, but I think he can stretch the budget a bit.

Same card. They both suck. The Phoenix is the toilet bowl model from ASUS. The components used are the ones that were dropped into a toilet bowl and fished out. If, by chance, ASUS puts together a Phoenix card out of components that weren't fished out of the toilet, fear not, they'll drop the completed product in there just to be sure it gets that poopy performance boost.

Seriously, if you want anything resembling a halfway decent value, get a $200-250 GTX 1070 off of eBay. There's a 30-day money back guarantee on it from eBay that is bulletproof. The 1070 easily stomps the 1660. You're basically paying $380 for an RX 580 with this card's performance level.

I wouldn't recommend any brand new card right now, but if you've got to have new, you've got $400, and you don't mind paying nearly that amount for a card released two years ago for $220, hey, more power to you.

5700 or 5700xt.

Good luck finding one for that price though. Don't get me wrong, 8-12 months ago that was definitely the right card to get for $400, but you can't touch them for that right now. I paid $410 for my Red Devil November 2019, and I could resell it on eBay for $650-800 right now, kinda crazy.

As ridiculous as the market is right now, your best bet is used. If you keep an eye on local listings in your area (probably not eBay), occasionally you'll find someone selling a GPU for a sane price that you can snag before someone else does.

Might be worth keeping, almost $4 per day mining on one now.  More mining will cause crypto prices to drop and then lower cost of gpu.  So, if enough gamers add to number of cards mining it will crash the prices on miners and make gpu affordable again once bitcoin is no longer as profitable.

I just feel some type of way knowing the current market has the audacity to price a 1660 at $400, lol

that won't cause crypto prices to drop. mining is processing transactions in exchange for a small percentage, and the power they use is a lot compared a 3060ti I could pick up in the future for the same price. Mining literally powers the blockchain, and as someone who uses both bitcoin and ethereum, I don't want the prices dropping anytime soon. would rather take the $600 for selling it.

5700xt is about $3.60-3.70 after electric cost per day.  Also, power used for gpu heats room as efficiently as electric heat, so in winter if using electric heat anyway electricity is free, Unless racks of cards like pro miners use takes more power then heater would.  If prices on crypto don't crash first,  less then year to make $1000 mining on 5700xt.  If prices on coins don't drop, 3060ti will be way over $1000 still.   More cards mining will lower value per card, So sooner it will cost more for power then the cost of hashes and gpu inflation goes down, and miners start flooding market with used cards.

If I was you, I would save a little bit more money and try to get a 3050ti, which should be coming later this year.

I thought about that, unfortunately, I can not wait. The build that this is going in in is for a friend. He really does not care about price/ performance. His birthday is next week so he wanted to treat himself to a new PC.

I think that this is the best option:
