Can I cheap out and buy a 6 pin y-splitter that will allow me to populate both ports off of the single cable, or will that fry my card?

Here's a timestamp you might want to watch:

A 6-pin is rated for 75w. So using it for both might work, but it could also overload the cable and/or power supply.

I recently got a HD7870 on the cheap with the intent to throw it into an old pc. unfortunately coolermaster 400w psu inside only has a single 6-pin power cable for the gpu. Can I cheap out and buy a 6 pin y-splitter that will allow me to populate both ports off of the single cable, or will that fry my card?

If your PSU doesn't have 2 6-pin's, it's for a reason.

Get a better PSU.

Thats really good to know. considering the PSU doesnt have any 80+ certification I dont really want to take the risk. Thanks

Just FYI: 80+ is an efficiency rating. For safety you would want to look for UL, CSA, or TUV certification. Many prebuilts will have UL, CSA, or TUV but no efficiency rating.
