1080TI - Lack of new cards - buy another 1080TI cheap and run SLI?

Silentcough

Im wondering if buying a cheap 1080TI to run SLI with my current 1080TI is a valid option now? I cant get any of the 3070-3090 cards from Nvidia and none of the new 6800xt-6900xt cards from AMD. So i was thinking about running SLI on my 1080TI instead, will it be usable now? I only play League, COD/Warzone, PUBG, CS, WOW etc.

No, SLI is dead and has been for a while, and is really stupid to do tbh.

SLI is pretty much dead. There are very few modern games that support it, and even fewer that support it well. Save your money for when a 3070/3080 is actually available.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

With all the scalpers around here in Norway i cant see any available normal priced gfx cards in 2021. So i will be forced to wait until 2022 atleast to get any good cards. 3070's go for 1000usd, 3080 go for 1500usd+ and 3090's go for 2000usd+. AMD's RX 6800XT go for 1400usd+, 6900XT is 1600USD+, used cards and new. I can get a 1080ti ASUS ROG STRIX for 150usd from a friend, with a EK waterblock on it.

$150 for a 1080ti is a steal. Personally I'd take it and flip it on eBay for 3x the price, put the money towards a new GPU when the stock situation improves.

But as the others have said, SLI is dead. Barely any modern games have support for it, you'll be getting the downsides without any of the upsides.

3x? More like 2.5x.

Probably depends on your region. Here in the UK they're selling for £400-500. So well over 3x $150 (which is ~£330).

I very seriously came so close to buying a 1080 TI.

I literally went to send an email to the seller, but like 3 hours previous, a Vega 64 popped up for sale, for the same price.

I now have a Vega 64.

Unfortunately, the Vega 64 is in the performance Tier of the 1080, not the 1080 Ti.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

If you only play these games, why would you need more graphics power? Do you own a 4K 120Hz monitor by chance? Or a 1440p 240Hz? Otherwise the graphics you have are plenty for really high framerates, especially if you're conservative with settings.

Hm, not entirely sure, but... It's sort of a non-issue, anyway, since I will eventually get a 6800XT. Or 6900XT. Just waiting for stock at this point. Then the card will go in my rendering rig, where it will live until it dies. The most important thing is that the Vega 64 had a 2 slot cooler, the 1080TI had a 3 slot, which limits my options in the render rig...

Maybe in the same boat I was? I had a 980, and even on minimum settings, I was having trouble driving a 1440p 144hz panel.

But, I digress, SLI probably isn't worth it for any of those games. The last SLI setup I had was two 6600GT's, so it's been a while.
