OnePlus and Updates.

Go to solution Solved by Darkseth,

On Updates, there are 2 different things to consider:

1. How timely and regularely you get Monthly Updates, or Major Updates?

2. For how long is a Device supported with Updates?

Samsung is good with Updates, if you buy a Flaggship. Actually, one of the best.

No Joke. They have been for years now.

My March 2016 Galaxy S7 (Edge) only got Android 7, and Android 8.1 (2 Major Updates), while a Pixel 1 from October 2016 got 3 Major Updates.

However: Pixel 1 got a little over  3 years. December 2019 it got it's last update.  Galaxy S7 Edge even got March 2020 Security Updates.

So yes: Samsung supported the S7 series almost a year longer than Google did their Pixel 1, despite the HUGE difference in the number of Phones both companies had to support during that Time.

Google is great with updates for the first 3 years. You get every single Security Patch, and Major Update without a Day of waiting. But that's it. 3 Years.

On Samsung their flaggships get 4 years security patches. And they are MUCH more important than major updates (especially on non-stock Android phones, since they already come with tons of Features, stock android doesnt have.

Recently, Samsung announced, they want to bring 3 Years Major Updates, and 4 Years Security Patches to their S-lineup.

If that turns out to be True, Samsung WILL be better with Updates than Google. They will come slower, but longer - which is more important.

Oneplus isn't that special tbh. Their Flaggship gets the new version pretty damn fast. Android 11 on my Oneplus 8 Pro for example. But that's it. My last Security Patch was in November, with Nov 1st Security Patch level.

Yesterday i updated too the new Patch (didn't got it pushed yet, i got it via Oneplus Updater), it STILL sits on Nov 1st Security Level. (but i don't care, because they fixed that Keyboard Gap on the bottom)

However, Oneplus brings 3 Major Updates to their Spring lineup, and a little over 3 years Updates. Oneplus 5/5t was just announced EoL.
But other than that, Oneplus isn't that great with Updates, even their new Flaggship skips a Month regularely. I've had that with Oneplus 6t, and 8 Plus. Samsung does a better job here, the new models rarely skip a Month or 2 in the first year.

However, again: Oneplus delivers Updates for the next 3 years. Which is important.
It really REALLY doesn't matter if your security patch is a month old or 2.

I have a question for the community here. How good is Oneplus with their android updates? I had been using Samsung phones since the galaxy s2 and upgrading every 2nd so s4-s6-s8 and i remember the updates being very slow. So i went with OnePlus in 2019, The 7 pro to be exact. At the same time i bought a Galaxy s10 for my little brother. Last week he tells me that he has received the android 11 update and now I'm left wondering. Are there any other phone companies that are good with updating their phones in a timely fashion? I know apple are pretty good, but I would prefer to stay on android.

I don't think your phone is in the 3 updates category, so it'll likely only get 2. Apparently there's a bug keeping them from releasing it yet, but it's coming.

The added length of time is the perfect showing of how hard it is for companies to update devices when their portfolio grows.

Do these updates actually change anything for you?

Instead of trying to force your views on others, can you please be helpful? You're not going to make anyone share your belief that updates are largely worthless, so you can at least answer the OP's question.

To actually answer the OP: apart from OnePlus, Google is obviously very good about updating Pixel phones in a timely fashion.

Thanks! I used to be into the custom rom scene some years ago with my s4, might be a solution again i guess.
