Hi guys, i currently having a problem with my hdd, so it is a WD RE4 (WD1003FBYX), and im planning to use it as a replace my current seagate hdd. so ive been ecountering errors when copying games files like huges of gb execpt for valorant and genshin impact files (idk why). Im formatting the OS 128gb and the rest for data

I've tried to make a backup of steam games on my seagate drive (phasmo, csgo, and apex), and it always comes up at corruption when steam on my new drive tries to recover from the backup.

This also apply when i tried to copy my GTAV files from egs directory on my seagate drive and some of them goes on error. i used teracopy after some googling, and yes there is several failed copy, marked as "Data Error (Cyclic Reduancy Check). Code 23" and i've tried to copy the specific files that is failed. back when im using my seagate drive, all of the games are perfectly normal. Directly from the seagate drive to my wd drive.

Some Questions:

  1. Full format the HDD will fix it?
  2. Does Old Drive make that much noise when operating?
  3. Currently im surface test it on ease us, is there a way to lock the bad sectors and when i format the drive, the bad sector wont be used? also is it worth to wait the surface test?
  4. Why does this occurs when im copying big files? I always got corruption when trying to make them verify (steam games show errors, EGS stuck at 37% when verifying gta v files and it makes the hdd like 100% unless i close it.)
  5. is there any solution for this problems?
  6. Is this happened bcs of bad sectors

i really mean your help, TIA.

Bad sectors means the HDD is going bad. You can use Crystal DIsk Info to check the Health. Also isnt that drive an Enterprise drive?

No.

If there are bad sectors, the likelihood is that the drive will continue to deteriorate and you'll get more and more of them. Doing a full, long format will mark some of the sectors as bad and the OS won't use them, but it often misses some of them and it obviously will not protect against any new ones, so no, it's not a magic bullet.

It has nothing to do with the filesize. Those bad sectors just happen to reside in the same area as your files, simple as that.

Yes: you buy a new drive.

IIRC, while Enterpise drives have longer warranties, they fail more often I think. Anyways check the health using Crystal Disk Info, it sounds that drive failed already and should not be used if you care about your time and data.

dang got no money rn, im planning on installing windows on it, and if i fully done surface test and full format, will the bad sector on hdd could be separated, or i do need to install the os and do the surface test again?

Do not install windows, check the drives health using Crystal Disk Info or any surface checker. Bad sectors have a threshold, since you already are seeing issues, you most likely will get more and you are past that threshold. You will have a bad time if you do. This is why Enterpise drives and Used drives are not very ideal

Your best option is a full zero to the drive, which can help at times, but if that doesn't help, your gonna get errors in the data until you can replace the drive.

Id really just try to replace it asap.

Also just make one big partition, no real reason to have a os partition.

1. soft bad sector, yes. hard bad sector no. use HD Sentinel and use full scan with bad sector fix (paid).

2. NO. Healty drive usually don't make any noise.

3. You should surface scan bad drive to see if the bad sectors are prominent or not. if it's all over the place (5% +) dump it.

4. Maybe those big files hit the bad sectors.

5. Read no.1

6. Bad sectors can happen in new or old drive, if it's small, usually windows can handle it.

haha its just me who likes to organize  things so i could shift where to place etc.

You can do that with folders, and its much more flexible as well, so your not limited by how you setup partitions.

ive done it before, but it is why im asking, corrupted files during copy. also why enterprise drives are not ideal. i still currently use this seagate (ST1000DM003) from a second hand market, and its very fine. so what should i do to my wd drive?

For SSD yes. For HDD is actually recommended to have an OS partition for better performance.

Short stroking doesn't raelly have a big performance impact, also you may be forcing it to spend more time seeking as there farther away.

Yeah, on a very old early 2000 HDDs.

New HDD (this decade) don't make any noise.

As I said, according to most, they often have a higher failure rate.

Than you got a better drive. You win some, you lose some.

Recycle it, take the magnets from it to make a spare parts tray. I don't recommend using it if its about to kick the bucket.

Also if you used Crystal Disk Info, what did it say? If its anything but healthy you really shouldnt be using it.

I have heard some pretty loud new drive. Really depends on model, not year.

could easeus partition master fix it?

A zero of the drive might fix it, but depends on the exact issue. Id just get a new drive asap as it will only get worse.

Spinning loud, probably ok. But loud seeking i never heard that, at least with any of my (old) hdds.

Only old broken hdd makes electric noises.

Yeah this is a 2010/2011 WD RE4 (not RE4-GP).

Is is normally loud? if not then it's probably a physical problem.

If you hear unusual noises, maybe it's time to dump it.

10 years is about the age of a normal HDD.

i cant say unusual noises since i dont know how unusual drives are but the spin up is pretty normal, only on intensive read/write the head/actuator (idk what it is called) sounds like a fast spin with hard noise.
