what parts would make this a full server

i put in the order for the server today but the seller is on vacation till the 27th and i want to have ram with my server.

I can't see the link to the server that you bought, but does the seller of the server not sell ram as well? I would have gone with a package deal. There are thousands of fully working used servers on ebay for a steal of a price. No sense going piece meal unless you have very specific hardware needs (which it sounds like you do not)

Is it possible to cancel that order, there is likely much better options for your use. Id go 2u or bigger, and id go fully ready. Probably something liek a r710

Its a 2.5in model, so make sure you have 2.5in drives. And the perc 6i is limited to 2tib and kinda slow with ssds. Otherwise looks fine.

Just get a desktop, load it with drives. With what you are doing, you don't need server hardware, just server software.

If you are set of server gear, then something like this...(not necessarily this exact one)

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-T320-Tower-Server-w-Intel-Xeon-E5-2420-6-Core-1-9GHz-12GB-RAM/274613184861?hash=item3ff038a95d:g:bokAAOSw2PVf0rFd

Otherwise, I'd go with a chinese x79 based xeon system.

Can this model host a fiber card? Recommendations?

I have  an extra DELL C856M / 0C856M Emulex Dual Port PCI-e HBA Network Adapter Card

Yea it should work with that fiberchannel card.

But also whats your goal with fiberchannel? its not compatible with ethernet and a dyeing standard now.

Hmm.

Goal is a NAS with fastest ethernet (fiber?) connectivity to my proxmox host.

Ideally, I will run vm & lxc's hossted on the chenbro NAS

fiberchannel isn't ethernet and is incompatible. You don't want to use that card here.

You probably want a sfp+ 10gbe nic instead. Those are ethernet over fibre, not fiberchannel.

Assuming that you are the op using a new user account, you are chasing a useless speed. With 6 spinning disks, you don't need fiber speeds between servers.

I doubt that you will break 10gb/s with that setup. I could be wrong, but I don't think you need so much speed.

Make a new thread then.

Id get something like a connect x3 here, or x520.

You can easily break 1gbe though, and used 10gbe prices are simmilar to 2.5gbe so why not go 10gbe here.

I agree with 10gbe, I don't agree with anything faster.
