PSU recommendation for 5900x and 3090 or possible 3080 ti

Hello All

i was wondering if you guys can recommend a Power supply for a 5900x and RTX 3090, or if it does come out a 3080 ti. I know we don't know the actual specs of 3080 ti but we can make some assumption i guess.

What i was thinking was the corsair RMX 850w psu, but im not sure if 850w is enough, do you guys think a 1000w psu will be better?

Also do you think going for a higher rate psu is a must, or should 80+ gold is good enough?

Thank you for reading and answering.

I bought Bitfenix Whisper M 850W for the same CPU and RTX 3080 or RX 6800/6800XT.

as long as the quality of the PSU is good, don't worry about the efficiency

850 watts will be plenty. The 3080 and 10900K can run on a 600 watt PSU just fine

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

You would not be able to overclock the 10900K on 600 Watts with a 3080, or the 3080 itself.

I recommend at least 750W for 10900K+3080, more if you want to overclock. RTX 3080s can have big spikes in power at the beginning of a workload that will trip OCP on lower rated PSUs than that. 850W preferred if you're going to OC.

If only one user can pull it off, or a very small minority, then it's a fluke. I'd rather people played it safe and got a higher rated PSU instead of risking having to return their computer parts.

If you're a savvy user who understands the reason why shutdowns happen, pick out a unit for yourself and take on the financial risk of it not working, go ahead. But I consider it reasonable to assume that someone who's asking for PSU recommendations in a forum is not this kind of person.

Got a 2016 Corsair RM750 here to power a 5800X and 3080 and have had it randomly power off twice now. So now that I am in the market for a new PSU I might as well get a 850W. If I had a 3090 and and needed to replace my PSU then I would get a 1000W one.

Having the system below with a 3080 FTW3 Ultra (XOC 450W BIOS) my power draw in gaming is over 650W... And that's not with the GPU overclocked.

OC it and run tests etc and I see well over 700W power draw (not from the wall), approaching 800W.

I have seen more than 470W power draw just from the 3X 8 Pin alone... Not overclocked either.

The price difference between 850W and 1000W of the same model is usually small, considering prices of the other parts. I'd go for 1000W RMx

Edit... ok, checked out 850W is about 160 and 1000W is about 200. The price gap is there, but buying a PSU for a few upgrades I think it will pay off.

Matter a taste though, 850W is enough for given parts.

I edit my posts more often than not
