Is Seasonic Focus FM 650w Gold enough for RTX 3080?

Hi,

I currently have i7 9700k @5.0ghz and 2080s and im getting rtx 3080 AIB, can my seasonic handle it ?I cant buy new PSU now, and the card is on the way.

I ready that some issues from the rtx 3080 is due power issues or cables?

thanks,

Nvidia recommends 750w. But your build with a 3080 should be pulling around 550 575 watts. So.. it will be close. It just depends on spikes. your going to have to test it

As already said by narrdarr, Nvidia recommends 750W. I personally would go for a 800W PSU because then you can be sure it will be enough and you can also keep it if you will upgrade to an even more power consuming GPU or CPU. And if you spend a little bit more on the PSU for one time it can last a life time. But before you buy a new one, try it and see what happens.

But now, fellow gamers, that was it for me. Please keep in mind, that this is just my personal opionion and I am no expert. Your system shall be cooled forever, see you next time.

when was it bought? because if its post 2018 its likely a fine unit. if its before its likely to trip if you dont drop down the powerlimit to mitigate the transient spikes caused by the cards boosting.

not really related to wattage requirements, its more due to transient sensetivity

could be pre january 2018 unit. just test it. if it doesnt work properly in Superposition benchmark, then drop down the powerlimit untill you can get a non-transiense sensetive PSU.

No, it really can't..

You need to get a new a PSU 750W or higher, 850W.

The best thing you can do is leave the GPU in the box it comes in until you get a new PSU.

this is an fm650, not the gm650 where the problems were fixed. also, the 2018-2019 focus units still had problems where instead of shutting down at higher loads, they would ripple.

Undervolt and/or lower the power limit, until you get a new, better power supply. If the Focus FM and FX's issues with Vega's transient spikes are anything to go by, you're probably going to have a hard time powering a 3080 at full blast.

After you get a new PSU, feel free to crank the power limit back up (the undervolt I'd keep though - more often than not on Nvidia GPUs, you can get the same performance at a significant power/temperature/noise drop).

Some units I'd look at are the Corsair RMx, Bitfenix Whisper M, Super Flower Leadex III, Fractal Design Ion+, be quiet! Straight Power 11 and Enermax Revolution DF - just to name a few. 650-850W should do (could go for 750W just to be more on the safe side); any more than that (even 850W in fact, unless you're shoving 500W into a Strix or FTW3 3080 for some reason) would be redundant imo.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Has to be the GM or the newer GX etc..... AND 750W or higher.
