imo yes, it would be a waste. The 780 is just sooo cheap right now.

 

Edit: and since you are already running a 7970, even the 780 is a waste lol. Just wait for maxwell :D

It would be a waste, but not because of the impending 800 series. I'd say that the extra $200 USD or so isn't worth the performance difference of a 780 Ti compared to a 780.

A 780 (ti or not) is going to be slower than 2x 7970s without a doubt. You should look at the 290 and the 780 as refresh cards bringing about 20 -40% extra performance or so not as new cards, because capability wise they very similar to what you have. Your next useful upgrade that actually has a decent chance of bringing real performance is with 20nm.
