"deep" book recommendations

Guest

Not seeking to look pretentious but .. does anyone recommend any "deep" books?

I'm looking for philosophy or stories with a message that isn't lame like "my true friends were here all along." "It's about the journey not the destination."

Or something like really cool story or concept.

Some examples of things I'm talking about are like the following:

Philosophy:

Slaughterhouse five

1984

The social contract

Stories: (not deep but cool or fun to read)

Roadside picnic

Fifteen hours

Is the dune series worth reading?

No anime nor manga. I'm also going to say no comic books. I've enjoyed some in the past but I'm looking for stuff with words. I'm okay with controversial topics as recommendations.

I'm not looking for history textbooks. I have some already. If there's any biographies worth reading, feel free to drop titles.

I enjoyed

Old blood and guts (general Patton)

I also saw the movie Lawrence of arabia. Not sure if the book would be worth reading if I saw the movie.

No longer human by dansai

Ps: there is a manga adaption of this.. but it's an adaption, so don't worry

After that one I will also take a look to other works of dansai

You can get both with Umberto Eco, in particular "The name of the rose" and "Foucault's pendulum". The latter may make you feel like you need to know more about a lot of things to fully enjoy it, but it's fantastic regardless.

It depends on which topics you enjoy more. I personally like Schumpeter's "Capitalism, Socialism, Democracy", but on the more political side there are  a number of classics written reading, if nothing else, because they are enjoyable in style.

And then in pure philosophy there's "Thus spoke Zarathustra". You just be to be careful with that one because of how it's written: it's easy to go through it very quickly, without stopping too much to think and therefore without getting too much from it (especially nothing "deep" if you stay on the surface - it's like you are reading some confusing fables :P)

Yes, I'd say so. At least the first one, you can decide from there if it's worth to you, and where the money grab begins :P

On the science fiction front, I can also recommend "Foundation" by Asimov, "2001" by Clarke, and" More than human" by Sturgeon. Each of those is nothing like the others, so you may see which is best for you, if any.

I'm sure I'll come back later thinking I forgot some obvious recommendation.

An exceptional book.

I can also recommend 'in search of Schroedinger's cat' by Gribbin

On a completely different subject - 'the art of war'  (sun Tzu ) and 'the prince' (Machiavelli) are well worth reading.

Throw in the 'the ten books of architecture' by vitruvius and you have quite a list.

On the fiction side 'small god's' by Terry pratchet is superb (actually any of his disc world novels, but this one in particular)
