Planning Next Gen AMD Build

Budget (including currency):
    - 2,000-3,000 USD.

Country:
    - Portland, Oregon, USA.

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:
    - Gaming, a bit of AAA gaming...
        - Insurgency Sandstorm, Deep Rock Galactic, Doom Eternal, 7 Days to Die, etc.
    - VR gaming (Quest 2, Rift).
    - I might get into developing VR games?
Why are you upgrading:
    - Running a 8 year old build I got help with in college that I've only upgraded with a 1080 GPU and replaced the CPU heatsink on.

    - Would like a build I dont touch for a few years again and the new AMD GPU and CPU look nice.
    - Existing Build:

  • PSU: Antec NeoECO C NeoECO 620C 620W ATX12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
  • MBoard: MSI Z77A-G41 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
  • Case: Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
  • GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW DT GAMING ACX 3.0, 8GB GDDR5X, RGB LED, 10CM FAN, 10 Power Phases, DX12, 08G-P4-6284-KR
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3470 Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.2 GHz LGA 1155 77W BX80637i53470 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500
  • RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMP16GX3M2A1600C10
  • Storage: Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive, SAMSUNG 830 Series 128GB Solid State Drive

Notes: I've never messed with OCing or having to adjust RAM frequencies and such things. Should I just buy a prebuilt? I would like a front USB-C for linking my Quest 2. I also am interested/pondering strapping it under my sit/stand desk. I could take or lose RGBs, as long as everything looks neat and clean. I like the idea of a White build. I like the idea of a SFF build.
Existing Monitor: One "Acer Predator XB271HU bmiprz 27" WQHD (2560x1440) NVIDIA G-SYNC IPS Monitor, (Display Port & HDMI Port, 144Hz), Black"

    - Might get a second.

your builds look good apart from the cases. you are sacrificing performance for looks. the h510 has poor airflow and gets very hot.

the other 2 mini itx suffer from the same issues. you shouldn't really get mini itx builds unless absolutely necessary.

Would you recommend this one?

This includes a monitor because it is recommended to play at 4k on a 3080. You can carry over your old hdd for more space. Note that 1 type a usb on the front panel wont work as most motherboards do not have a header. Obviously the gpu and cpu are out of stock

I was going to wait on the Radeon 6000 series gpu. Why a 5800X over 5600?

I actually purchased a few components on sale last night so some stuff is locked in now. I like the case Excorcist_46 picked, and those case fans.

I understand that even a 5600x beats out a 10900k which was the fastest gaming cpu till 2 weeks ago, but it is still a 6 core. It is nice to have a 8 core because it is the standard these days. You made 2 mistakes. 1st being that you bought 3200 mhz ram which is over priced, the kit you see in my build is 16*2 3600mhz cl16 for 165, so in you got 2 of these kits it would be the exact same price but with higher speeds, you can easily get extra 5% performance with higher speed ram. 2nd is that you have a 750 watt psu, with a 3080 you need to get a 850 watt psu and the 6800xt is neck to neck with the 3080 so i expect to see the same power draw. Last thing i wanted to say is that if you like the case fans and the case, get them now because they are on sale. Get the single pack of fans because they have a 9 dollar discount(40-9).

I didn't see huge performance gains for gaming between 6-8 cores, but I have the cash so I guess why not. I ultimately picked that ram for the design. I haven't purchased a pwu so I'll look for a higher watt one. I like the case but the front io wouldn't work with the mobo I picked. Thanks for the feedback!

Excorcist_46, if I get 4 of those fans do I need a hub for the rgb?

Will I need a last gen cpu before being able to use the new amd cpu?

Didn't get my hands on either a cpu or gpu. Sounds like I should go 3080 an a ryzen 9 5900 once available. Will I need an older cpu first before I can use the new cpu?

I must say, I do like the H1 case from NZXT. It’s also a great way to get an included cooler, however be aware that there isn’t the most room for you to have one of the larger GPUs (especially the RTX series)

  • 2 weeks later...

So I finally got a Ryzen 7 5800 CPU and built the pc described above, but I'm getting the DRAM led on the motherboard. I've tried 1 stick in all slots, 2 sticks, all 4 sticks for 64GB, and finally clearing the rtc ram and then trying 1 and 2 sticks (in the correct slots). The Boot led goes green, before the rtc it would flash and turn off, after it stays lite green. I don't have a GPU plugged in yet. The ram lights up. I get no display through the MB hdmi port. Would this be because of the bios update for the 5x cpu?

Anything else to try before I have to RMA the MB?

Talked to Asus, the rep said the bios update is what is causing it, I'm skeptical but have requested a loaner from amd.
