Java ArrayList Printing Elements

If you override the toString(): string method to your data class, which is jobSchedule (rename to JobSchedule), you will be able to do: 

System.out.println(array.get(i)); // automatically will try to get toString method of JobSchedule, since you did not override, it will get toString method from Object

Something like: 

@Override
public string toString() {
    return "[" + this.ID + ": " + this.runtime + "]"; // you can personalize your output here
}

How do you print the elements in an ArrayList? I thought I could run a loop for array.length() and inside have array.get(i) with i being the index. But when I do so I get what looks like a memory address. I think it might be because I am using a Collection sort on the arraylist but I am not sure. Here is my code

The object you're working with in the array probably doesn't have a defined toString() function? When an object doesn't have a toString, Java prints its memory address.

 

Also, Java has enhanced for loops. They make life so much simpler...

	System.out.println(o.toString());	// This will iterate through all the entries in the ArrayList and print their "toString" function

You should be able to do: 

final List<String> list = new ArrayList<>();
list.add("a");
list.add("b");
list.add("c");

System.out.println(list);

This should result in the following output: 

[a, b, c]

 

If you use a custom object, the only requirement would be that this object implements a "toString()" method to give you some sensible output, otherwise you simply get: 

[java.lang.Object@243c4f91, java.lang.Object@291ae, java.lang.Object@61df66b6]

 

By the way, you should write your methods to accept the least specific implementation possible. So e.g. "List<>" (or even "Collection<>"). This way you could change your implementation from "ArrayList<>" to e.g. "LinkedList<>" (if needed) without having to update all your methods. 

private void printJobScheduling(final List<JobSchedule> schedules) {
	schedules.sort((a, b) -> b.runtime - a.runtime);

	for (final JobSchedule schedule : schedules) {
		System.out.println(schedule);
	}
}

If you override the toString(): string method to your data class, which is jobSchedule (rename to JobSchedule), you will be able to do: 

System.out.println(array.get(i)); // automatically will try to get toString method of JobSchedule, since you did not override, it will get toString method from Object

Something like: 

@Override
public string toString() {
    return "[" + this.ID + ": " + this.runtime + "]"; // you can personalize your output here
}
