Hello,

My computer started giving me warnings that my cpu (i9) was overheating. When I checked a temperature app, my cpu(s) were running at 95C while idling. So I decided to take off the heatsink and check the thermal paste. After that, for the life of me, I cannot screw back in the heatsink. I’ve never seen a heatsink with these spring type screws before. When I try to screw one down the heatsink is at such an angle that the screw would go in slanted. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong with these spring screws? I’ve attached a photo.

im thinking about just buying another heatsink that installs normally. Would anyone have a recommendation for a msi mpg z390 gaming pro carbon ac motherboard?

I don't even understand what's so difficult about those. I mean, you just screw them in; it's not like it's rocket-science.

Your pump failed, not the thermal-paste or anything like that.

When installing the screw don't fully tighten each screw one at a time. If you do this you will run into the problem you are having. Instead start screwing in only until the threads start to catch and the screw will hold itself. Then move onto the next screw and do the same thing. When all of the screws are slightly screwed in, start tightening the screws evenly, meaning 1-2 rotations on one screw, move to the next one, repeat until screws are all the way tightened.

Edit: That's advice on how to install a cpu cooler in general, in your case it sounds like the pump has failed as WereCatf has mentioned.

The problem is, the thread is at the very bottom of the screw (vs the entirety of it), and I have to press down extremely hard to catch the threading on one side of it. Which then causes the heatsink to be diagonal in the air if that makes sense

Welcome to the forum, remember to quote the person you're replying to so they'll see it

Or you can mention them like this

It won’t screw on due to the sharpest of the angle. Does the bracket come off from the circular part of the cooler perhaps?

Do you know what model the cooler is? The owners manual should have installation instructions that might show something that needs to be done differently.

Unfortunately it came with the pre built pc and it’s just called “iBUYPOWER 120mm Addressable RGB Liquid Cooling System - Black-”

Just for clarification, there's supposed to be a metal bracket on the other side of the mobo that those screws screw into -- is that bracket still in place?

Yes thank you. I did not build this PC and I wasn’t aware there was a rear mounting bracket that came loose. I have it resolved now, thanks m8
