25% off Samsung 860 EVO 2TB worth it?

GamerBlake

Hey guys I’m upgrading my storage and I see that Amazon has a 25% off deal on the Samsung 860 EVO for Prime Store Card holders and I’m wondering if it’s worth it?

With the discount it would be $199 for a 2TB Samsung 860 EVO SATA SSD.

Thanks

Thats a great price for it. If you need it and can afford it, jump all over it.

Not an amazing deal since similar performing drives new cost between 220 and 240 but still a savings of 20$.

Isn’t Samsung better than most other brands though in terms of warranty and quality? I’ve never gotten a broken or damaged part from them.

Alright thanks! I just wasn’t sure if maybe there was some weird reason it was being offered or if there are better prices elsewhere.

Depends. I've had my fair share of dead samsungs. But then again so have I with other brands.

In my opinion yes. I have four in use for a few years and did not have a single problem. I have bought a SSD from another brand once and it broke within 2 weeks.

I’m using a Samsung 1TB 970 Evo Plus NVMe, a 1TB 860 EVO and a 1TB 860 QVO and so far they’re all working in sync and flawlessly.

I was planning on replacing my 1TB WD Blue HDD with a 2TB 860 EVO since my WD Blue is in no shape to run modern games without shortening my lifespan significantly.

Well I mean yeah accidents happen but from what I’ve read Samsung is more of a “premium” brand no? They charge more but tend to put more quality into their products in exchange for the higher prices.

On their evo stuff honestly I don't think so. I've had 5 sata evo's fail (2 840's 2 850's and 1 860) my first 960 evo is also dead and my current 970 evo is probably soon to be dead I think. Not too surprising the absolute abuse they have to handle almost 24/7.

I have plenty of other drives like some sandisk ultra pluses, crucial mx500's, mushkin somethings, corsair force,... that broke and really they all just kinda break at the same time.  Part the 860 qvo I had that thing shits itself during just copying data and is slower than a harddrive so I doubt that will fail soon because of how slow it is.

Oh wow, sounds like you got really unlucky. I’ve had an 840 Pro and currently have a 970 Evo Plus, 860 EVO and an 860 QVO (like you mentioned) and none of them have caused me any problems whatsoever.

Im surprised you’re having issues with the QVO though. I put some of my less intensive games on that (not games like Red Dead Redemption 2) and I seem to get load times similar to my 860 EVO.

In fact when I installed RE:2 remake and RE:3 remake on both drives I couldn’t tell the difference.

I read that it’s only slower when moving large files (like 4K video) around because it has quick bursts of speed (like loading maps) and then slows down and if I wanted raw speed all the way through I would have to pay for the “Pro” version with 2 bit MLC rather than TLC like the EVO or QLC like the QVO.

Can pick up a wd blue for notably less. So i dont see a point of picking up a 860 evo.

As far as ive noted. They dont add anything notable to warrant the higher price, with a couple of exceptions.

Their stopped doing thay btw. 980 pro is regular TLC....... Which means for the workloads where these drives were usefull, the 980 pro is worse than the 970 pro.

I think you misunderstood. I already have a WD Blue and I’m upgrading it to an 860 EVO not looking to buy a WD Blue.

Ah well for $10 more the 860 EVO is definitely an upgrade over the WD Blue SSD. In fact it’s even better than the WD Black SSD. I don’t think $10 is worth downgrading all the way from 860 EVO to WD Blue.

Oh yeah for games it's alright but for anything data intensive it's crap (which is what I do). I got it for free so no loss. The reason I have all these dead drives is due to the fact I do graphic design and basically do the work of 3 people on my own 😛 (pays well tho). For example company A wants lets say id cards for their 200 employees. So I design about 6 or 7 different layouts in illustrator with adaptability so that according to the datafile where all the data is that is supposed to be on the card that I will have everything done automatically.

The reason I can do all this work is simply because I did programming and graphic design at school at the same time and know how to use and abuse the adobe software :p. So now for those 200 employees there are many different id cards (often multiple for events and such) which means I need a very high rez png too and some auto corrections of photo's in photoshop. So those kilobyte illustrator files are pulled over to photoshop and after doing that all those files are saved as usually 500mb psd docs which after all being completed are turned into pngs by a separate program (because adobe software is very slow in that) so in the end I end up having easily written almost 2 terrabytes of data to my drive and well that wrecks them.

Is there a better way to do it? Probably. But this is a cheap fast and easy to control way and I have the power of these programs to quickly change a lot of things to better fit my clients needs. So a drive or 2 every year really isn't bad.

Oh and yeah I do run this in parallel 3 vms + the host does this together before the drive gets pinned at 100% after it's cache fills.

The 860 evo and wb blue are both sata drives with basically identical performance. So really nothings lost nothings gained.

You speak as if there is a huge difference, there really isnt.

Its a very minor step up, tho really not worth it.

Also isnt it more like a 24$ difference?

I did the math wrong the first time. After the rebate and cashback the 860 EVO would cost me $187.49
