Hi all!

I want to upgrade my iPhone 7 and have been really looking at Oneplus. The newly launched 8T has everything I could ask for in a phone and most importantly for me: it is not too expensive (Europe)

But now my question is: Is their really a noticeable difference between 8GB ram and 12GB ram?

And if so, is it worth the extra €100? (the storage going from 128 to 256gb really doesn't matter for me)

Thank you in advance!

Gijs

Not for the how long you're likely to be using the device, I'd say, unless you're a power user (I'm guessing you're not, since you're still using a phone from 2016).

Just remember that pure RAM count isn't everything; new iPhones have 'just' 4GB or 6GB, but they're more efficient with memory use than Android devices. If that was a question in the first place, of course — the OnePlus 8T looks like a fine device if you're not concerned about camera quality.

The amount of ram is increased every gen just so it could keep up with the increasing resolutions of the cemeras, if your not warried about the camera then honestly 4 gigs of ramm is enaugh for android phones. But I have 128 gigs of storage on my phone and im almost out.

Thanks everybody! Basically what I was thinking, personally I won't need the 12GB then.

I feel like the camera quality of my iPhone 7, most of the time, is enough for me. I assume basically any 2020 phone (including the 8T) is gonna do an equally good or even better job?

What phone would you recommend if camera quality was a big factor? (In the same price category: 600-700 euros; keep in mind that even the iPhone 12 mini starts at 805 euro in Europe or at least in Belgium)

You'd think so, but it's fairly mediocre. not terrible, just not particularly competitive with rivals.

The iPhone 11 is a good pick now that there's a price cut. It'll blow the 7 out of the water (and the 8T, at least camera-wise) and holds up very well. In  the Android camp? Probably the Pixel 5, but it might not be available to you. There's also the Galaxy S20 FE if you don't mind the "glasstic" back,

Day to day use? Doubtful you'd actually be able to feel the difference. Maybe in games but overall, it's not something you can easily discern. After a few years it might come handy as apps and OS versions get updated (sometimes that adds drag) but in the short game, you're set with 8GB so save some cash and get that.

Matters for keeping apps in the background.

Agreed, but the difference between 8GB and 12GB would be small unless he was running a hundred things in the background. Your average user isn't going to notice the difference most of the time, which was OPs original question. But you're right, no doubt it's helpful for keeping apps open on the background, I just don't think it's something a person would actively notice.

Android isn't that great at memory management though tbh

It's come a long way that's for sure; it can't touch Apple but it isn't horrid, at least in my opinion. I mean I'm on a 4GB phone right now and still have almost 1GB free. Anecdotal for sure but depending on what kind of user OP is, I think that'd be the determining factor if he would really notice when it came down to it.

Fixed for ya!

Android 4 had no issues with that whatsoever (or maybe it was just the Sony fork, but memory management on my Samsung is absolutely terrible, as is battery management, you can't even turn it off!)

As a Multitasking Freak: You won't benefit from 12gb Ram. If you want to pay more, do it for the 256gb.

Oneplus isn't known for beeing the best in Ram Management. They "kill" Apps too early for my Taste, even when there are multiple gb left. They do that to save battery.

Example: Right now, i have 8.1gb Ram "used". Often it's below that. I have 12gb, idk why not every last gb is beeing used. I really hate reloading^^

So in short: You're fine with 8gb Ram on Android, even when you multitask alot. Most Phones won't use the 12gb enough to make it worth.

And because many people dont quite get what Ram actually does: More Ram does NOT make your phone faster, smoother, or higher performance, or higher fps.

It's simply the "size" of your Desk, if you wnt that comparison.

You won't type your document faster on a larger Desk, or read more Books. But if you need to change what you're doing, more stuff can be put on the Desk, and it will be "right there" ready to use.

There will be simply more storage for Apps. And if you switch back to an older App, there's a higher chance the App is still there, right where you left. Instead of the App "loading" from scratch.

Less Ram does NOT make your phone Lag. But it "closes" Apps faster, so when you open Apps, they reload more often.
