He needs to buy a better GPU, the 940MX was never a gaming GPU to begin with and it simply doesn't have enough RAM to run anything even remotely modern, even at low settings.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

Once GPUVideoRAM is full it tasks SYSRAM (Not always the amount you have, but less) VirtualRam
It's all Full.

So will increasing VRAM do any good ?

Either upgrade the GPU, system RAM, or both. If those aren't possible with the laptop then your friend is likely out of luck.

GPU incredibly unlikely to be able to be upgraded. RAM is possible provided the slots are accessible and the modules aren't soldered.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

A friend of mine is getting this error.

What to do ?

Some more context might be useful.

What laptop is it? What version of Windows?

Has the game ever worked or has it always given this error?
At what point does the error occur? ie, does it happen while loading, or once you are in-game?

that doesnt matter what resolution are you playing at

It might be possible to lower the texture resolutions if the game has some user-editable settings files (.ini, .cfg etc). Or it might be possible to force them lower with some GPU driver tweaks. Need more info though, and ideally someone that know about the game in question.
