I'm horrible at GIFs but was trying this out for a while.

gimp is free and pretty powerful, though very hard to use.  Making GIFs in it isn't too terrible, though.  You just have to get over a bit of a learning curve pertaining to how it deals with layers and the like.

I hate GIMP with a passion. It's one of the most unintuitive and cluttered user interfaces I've ever used. Did a usability test on it for my User Interface Design course and every participant had problems, even the ones who've used Photoshop extensively and those who were completely new to photo editing. It was that bad.

True.  I have yet to use it without cursing at it over some weird function that just didn't work the way it ought.  

It is, however, free and perfectly capable of doing everything I've ever wanted to do re: image manipulation (though that's not exactly a huge and complicated list, it is an eclectic one).

That is true, hard to beat free. And I don't think Adobe provides outdated Photoshop releases for free anymore. But I still maintain any piece of software that makes me ultimately hate life is one not worth using at all.

You know the old saying; it's not the journey, but the destination.  Any journey that ends in this:

is a worthy cause.  No matter that the apparently simple act of swapping out Black Mage's hat for this spiffy mushroom took at least 8 times longer than it had any right to take.  It was possible, dammit.
