Corsair RM750x Good enough for 3080?

Hi, I plan to upgrade my PC with RTX 3080 from Asus that TUF with OC, also I plan to use i7-10700K OC to 5GHz or something like that. I have water cooling Kraken x62. Do I need to upgrade my PSU from Corsair RM750x to something which has like about 1000W for example Corsair RM1000x or is that wattage good enough to handle that spec?

Yes, it's fine.

 

They recommend a 750W PSU.

I used this PSU calculator and I'm a little afraid that it is near the limit. That PSU has protection when system would want more power than PSU has, right?

What about that age of the PSU, does it matter here or not so much?
It seems it does have those protections, but do they work fine?

Well, the 750W is fine, my system pulls about the same overall power as yours will, does.

 

But yes if you want more room, or to keep the power draw more near that 40% to 65% range you could upgrade to a 850W PSU.

 

I did upgrade my 750W to 850W for that reason.

Some aren't actually that far off.. ;)

 

Others I have seen could be too high or too low depending.

 

I ran my PC specs through 8 different ones to check, and I know what my real power draw is.

PSU Calculators typically get their "calculated" number by adding the max draw of each individual component. In the real world all components will never simultaneously draw at their max, not even close to that. Depending on the calculator that number could also be inflated even further. My system is estimated between 650-800W depending on the calculator, using my UPS to read full system power draw from the wall I have never pulled more than 500W under max load.

Saw a few of them that only use straight TDP and they are way too low...

 

Then some others are way too high so...

Seasonic one, dead spot on for the most part on my system, slightly low even.... Mine actually pulls 660W+, have seen 700W power spikes and that's not from the wall either... So the 850W PSU recommendation is pretty spot on.

Have to know what the max power draw is of the system, fully loaded for power spikes etc....

 

That's different than the gaming load...

 

Saw my gaming load range from 450W to 600W depending on the game etc...

Well they recommend based on stock settings, not overclocked settings. And on stock, you can run it with a 500w PSU. I mean, when I run my 9900k @ 5.0Ghz (finally got a power meter), I use less than 100w from the CPU itself during gaming (after figuring out how to calculate my GPU power draw), can't say anything about the 2080Ti other than reviewers have measure gaming wattage usage of the GPU, which is around 280w stock during gaming. (of course the peak load at stock is like 360w, but wouldn't cause trouble for a 500w PSU).

 

So no, it's not low for the average consumer who only runs things at stock.

For those who overclock, adding 100/150 watts would be more accurate for their loads.

The only thing that is overclocked is the CPU. ;)

 

I don't run my 2080Ti OCed daily, only once in a while when benchmarking or something. All I did was raise the power limit so it can use the power it needs to draw.

 

The FTW3 Ultra is a factory OCed card so raise the power limit so it will maintain the clocks longer. Also ramp the fans to 100% and OC when testing...

 

It stays in the mid to high 60's C temp wise when OCed and pushed hard. 

 

Really don't gain too much FPS wise to run it OCed when gaming, not enough to run it that way anyway.

 

Maybe if I gamed at 4K it might be worth it, pushing the FPS higher...

I get quite a bump in fps with my OC on the 2080 Ti Strix. 130mhz on the core clock, 700mhz on the memory clock. Power limit 125%

Depends on the game and settings in the game really.

 

Mine can do +130 to +135 on core and +1350 on memory, 124% power limit.

 

Already getting high FPS at stock clocks so far... At 1440P...

 

Like I was saying maybe if I was playing at 4K..

 

Mine boosts to 2100 Mhz stock clocks.

I remember when OCing it back when I got the card, at some point high memory overclock was getting me less fps, and less stability. Try dialing it back just to see if you get any more improvements in game. I play at both 3440x1440 and 4k (monitor and tv connected to my pc).

Yeah, like I said I don't run it like that.

 

Only when testing and benchmarking, I worked up to that memory clock, higher performance.

 

An OC I would run every day would be something like +100 and +1000 on memory.
