Hi guys

I'm having some problems deciding which CPU to go with, as in I have no clue at all. I want to play some video games, edit some photos and run my PC through a thunderbolt cable, because I really don't want to listen to it. So would AMD or Intel be best suited and which lineup?

Best regards

Budget? this is a really vague question in all honesty, heck what board do you already have? if you don't already have one, budget for the whole build?

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad.

Audio: Logitech G432, Moondrop Starfield, Mic: Razer Siren Mini (White).

Phone: Pixel 3a (Purple-ish).

I don't have a board yet, I'm planning a completely new build. The budget is best bang for the buck really. I'm too busy with studies to play often and I don't have a ton of money as a student. Only thing that's a must, is the thunderbolt3 business, as I really cannot stand the hum of a pc.

Last I knew very few mobos on amd side have thunderbolt 3, double and triple check on that front.

Well as said above, not a lot of AMD boards have  tb3 port on the rear, though budget for a build? without a number it's kind of hard to make anything.

If the photo editing is nothing heavy and you will focus more on games then go with i5-9600k + z390 mobo (the i5-10600k + z490 is newer and more expensive but hardly any better). If the editing is more intensive and you do light gaming on the side then you might look into the r5 3600 + b450. I don't know what your budget is but those two are roughly the same price and good for two different things, you can go up or down from here.

I'll be honest, I'd prefer a motherboard with a displayport in and a thunderbolt3 port, which can do that funny business the titan ridge can, but I don't know if that even is a thing.

About 1.200-1.500 USD I guess, in total for a board, cpu, psu, ram, gpu.

It's raw photos with multiple layers, tend to pin my laptop pretty good. Especially when I'm contracted to do timelapses, but that's more the compiling of the video.

I would wait for ryzen 4th gen, but if you do now, a 3700x probably, for what you said.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

With that budget you could easily go for the i7-10700k with a z490 mobo (you can find ones with thunderbolt 3 in the 150-190 usd range). Other option is r7 3700 which is 50-60 usd cheaper but quite a bit slower as well and you might have a problem with finding a decent mobo with the features you need.

Should have explain this, I live in Denmark and IT is about 15-25% more expensive here than anywhere else I've ever seen. I can't even find an i7-10700K. (we've got a website that puts almost all IT shops on the same site). The i7-9700K is currently 2.903 DKK (about 355 USD).

Well you could wait for zen 3, and to check what it has to offer and then decide.

But..

The vision G isn't really the best board especially at that price, but it has a TB3 port, and you can get a 3070 which would add up to around 1300-1500 bucks. If you can just get an expansion card for TB3, you could go with the B550 a pro or the aorus pro or the b550 strix f or the b550 tomahawk and those are decent.

Depending on the scale of the project..

You could go with a 3700x if needed and you could go with 32 gigs if needed.

The scale is just a workstation/game pc (in that order), to be housed somewhere else than where I have to listen to it. Thanks a ton, that's given me something to work from :D

It's a dead platform, and comet lake is simply better, not "hardly any better".

Just because it's a few months old doesn't mean it's dead. And unless someone needs more than 6 threads/cores then the difference isn't much, especially after considering that it's significantly more expensive

That's not why it's dead, AM4 is a few years old and is not dead, it is dead because it wont get updated.

which... a lot of workloads can scale up to more than 6 threads..

It's not significantly more expensive..? prices where you live are not the prices somewhere else.
