What applications benefit from i7 vs i5?

Hello all!

So I was waiting for some downloads, and pondering a few different things...

But something that stuck on my head was this, "What programs benefit from hyper threading?"

 

Like, I know "editing" benefits, but like what programs, and in what way?

Is it just like video rendering? Orrr?

 

All help appreciated :)

Rendering in general although there should be more but I have limited knowledge and im tired :S

take look at the benchmarks, this shows the types of programs that the i7 pulls ahead in. Scroll down the page about half way.

Rendering, virtual machines, Google Chrome (if you use it pull up task manager, hunt down all the chrome.exe's you see, and you'll get it)...

Most of the time, no. Programming needs tend to be easily covered by toasters.

Compiling can take advantage depending on how I/O intensive the compile is. Interpreters could possibly benefit but I'm not certain if any do. And of course any programs you write that would take advantage of hyper threading would benefit too. Aside from that usually the sack of meat in the office chair is the biggest hold back in programming, so plan accordingly :).

Comparison between the two from a very good benchmark site, with workloads.

 

Games? Pretty much the same, though the I7 is better streaming/recording the newer games. The I5 isn't slow at that though. It has beaten the 8350 streaming BF4 benchmarks. The I7 is just better. 

 

I love my I7, but then again I bought it for peanuts at Microcenter. If you can't match their price? It is pretty darned expensive and the I5 and more GPU power is the way to go for gaming.

 

Also if not overclocking buy the 4770. It has some instructions on it that the 4770k doesn't. The 4770 is a better chip when the K isn't overclocked in some things that aren't gaming.  If you buy a K overclock that sucker :).
