Making Gaming computer with new RTX 3080

Budget (including currency): $1500-2000 CND

Country: Ontario

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: vrchat most popular vr

I just want to make a build that's good for the index but if I can put an RTX 3080 in that would be nice

My budget may be able to go to 2500 CND

I don’t know what “the index” is so I suspect I’m out of this one.  It could be a video game, it could be a day trading machine, it could be a lot of things.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Intel cpu for higher fps, albeit higher price
New Amd cpus news coming in ~2 weeks, worth considering if you can wait.

If not ryzen 3000 series is better price than Intel although max fps is a little lower (should still be fine for VR)

dont buy anything. zen 3 is being announced anytime soon. wait for their performance claims and pricing before making a move on any part. if you planned or were in favour of going amd anyways, buying a b450 (is this platform going to be supported by most companies?) or x570 board along with well known compatible ram would be a good choice. also, do you have a 3080 rn? future 30 series cards may interest you

PC specs:

Ryzen 9 3900X overclocked to 4.3-4.4 GHz

Corsair H100i platinum

32 GB Trident Z RGB 3200 MHz 14-14-14-34

RTX 2060

MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge wifi

NZXT H510

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

2 TB WD hard drive

Corsair RM 750 Watt

ASUS ROG PG248Q

Razer Ornata Chroma

Razer Firefly

Razer Deathadder 2013

Logitech G935 Wireless

Just wait a couple weeks so we know what the new generation stuff is. It would be worthwhile.

Also doesn't matter because 3080s won't be in stock till 2021.

Not at all. The 2080 super is already obsolete. Wait till 2021 when you can get a 3080 at a reasonable price + a 5700x. Unless you just want to spend 2500 dollars on something that will only be worth 1000 in a year.

future proof

stop. just buy a mac.

but aside from that joke, this build is far from perfect and i would not advise buying

first you only have a ssd. get a 500 gb or even less ssd as a boot drive, then get a 2 tb hdd. you could probably get more storage for your money.

second is that 2080 super. if you wanted to future proof THAT go ask the recent 2080 ti buyers for help

What would be a future proof build for the long run

The computer hardware market is in swirling flux right now and to make it worse there are indications that game programming itself may change.  The thing is less predictable this week than it has been in years.   There are a couple of serious unknowns that make everything difficult.  One is the true hardware capacity of the consoles. We thought we knew what they were, but it changed. Several times. That alone is enough to wreck predictability, but there are other problems as well.  Things should be much more clear shortly, but right now it’s mud.

2021 might not be necessary, but early to mid October is sort of a minimum. The only positive so far is it has been shown that even the new ray tracing capacity is less than half as powerful as it would need to be to truly change games. When it gets to the point that a game can be written to do all ray tracing all the time there’s going to be another sea change, but that one at least is out of the loop.  Minimum next major console generation for that.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
