I think you're confusing the TX850 with the TX850M. The 80+ Bronze rated TX850 is the TX V2 from 2010. 10 years old... Don't use a 10 year old power supply with a $1500 graphics card!

It switches the 12V rail between single rail and multi rail mode. Multi rail mode will enable the OCP on the virtual 12V rails to prevent you from drawing too much current through a single cable. Not important for normal operation, though in a small percentage of certain failures if other protections don't kick in it might help to shut down the PSU to prevent further damage. For the Corsair HX I believe it's 40A limit for the 12V rails when in multi rail mode. It should come set to multi-rail out of the box and you can just leave it in multi rail mode. The only reason to switch to single rail would be if you have problems with the 3090 drawing too much power and causing it to trip that OCP when in multi rail mode, but I doubt it will be an issue unless you're doing power mods to the card. Your current TX850 is single rail, btw.

I guess that rules out the AX1600i then. Go with the HX1200 Platinum, but make sure you find one that is actually close to MSRP and not stupid inflated prices due to the pandemic. It should be around $230-$250.

Hi, I currently own an i7 8700k, 1080TI, 16gb ddr4 corsair vengeance ram, aorus gaming 7 z370 motherboard with Corsair TX850w psu and a Thermaltake Chaser MK-I Full Tower Gaming Case - ATX.

I'm mainly interested in Corsair power supplies and I'm looking to get the best I can possibly get at the moment so I could at least feel like the upgrade from this 850w psu I currently have is worth it. The PSU I have is bronze rated so I unfortunately have to upgrade the psu if I want to get a 3090. I'm also trying to stay future proof so a 1200w highly rated PSU would be nice. What do guys think is a really good 1200w+ Corsair PSU that could fit my Thermaltake Chaser MK-I case?

hmm, see I've been getting a lot of mixed comments from people saying that it's enough to others saying that it's too old and I should just replace it. I really don't want to upgrade the PSU at all, trust me, but I changed my mind and I guess if I'm going to upgrade then I better be safe than sorry.

It's the old ~9 year old TX, not the new 80+ Gold 2017 model. I think getting a new unit isn't a bad idea at all, especially if OP plans on dropping $1500+ on a graphics card.

I agree on the wattage bit though, 1200W is ridiculous for a 3090 and 8700K.

Yeah I think he knew it was the bronze one because he said the bronze doesn't matter much for the quality of the PSU, but honestly I don't really know about that. Even if 1200w is ridiculous I still don't want to cheap out if i'm going to upgrade. Do you guys have any suggestions for a good quality 1200w Corsair PSU?

That is a pretty old psu, so yea getting a new unit isn't a bad idea.

wait for the 3090 to come out and check it's power consumption though 850w should be plenty for a 3090 and an 8700k, budget for a new unit? and location and currency?

when did you buy the PSU? and if you are going to replace it then go with a similar wattage one

It depends on the running age of it not when it has been made, both of them are generally great PSUs regardless of the efficiency rating

Well I want to go for 1200w anyway even if 850w is enough since it honestly doesn't feel good upgrading from an 850w psu into another 850w psu lol. I also would like to stay future proof. I would like to stay under $400 if that's even possible.

Honestly, don't remember how long I had it since I had to RMA at one point and I got a new one so i'm guessing maybe 6ish years. Not sure though.

I'm not saying efficiency is indicative of quality. I'm saying that it's an old unit, with a loud fan and double forward topology so even more noise because of coil whine, if the transients on the RTX 3080 are anything to go by. It's not in the same ballpark as something like a more modern RMx from Corsair.

Again, keeping an old mid-range PSU to pair with a new $1500+ GPU makes little to no sense to me.

The term "futureproof" is meaningless. Unless your crystal ball predicts that SLI/Crossfire are coming back (on that note, what will you be using the 3090 for even?), 1200W is a waste.

You have to see it like this. You are upgrading from a tx850 that cannot reach 850w anymore to a psu that can actually reach 850w. You really really really don't need a 1200w unit at all.

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9htQzy/be-quiet-straight-power-11-750w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-bn283

This one is really solid. Sure it's 100w less but still plenty for the card (or you get the 850w version) You may not have upgraded in wattage but you upgraded in efficiency and quality.

anyways first check the power consumption for the 3090 first but 850w should be plenty, you'll have a lot of headroom for the most part with an 8700k and a 3090.

but to name some units..

Is there a downside to upgrading into a power supply with more wattage than I actually need? sorry, I'm not very tech savvy so forgive me if I'm asking silly questions. Anyways I was already looking at the Corsair HX 1200w you linked and It looks good to me. It's modular too so installing it would be quite a bit less annoying.

Multi rail mode just adds more protection essentially, at this wattage (1200w) use multi rail mode.

A 1200W psu makes zero sense. You are better waiting for the RTX 3090 reviews to go live and then look at the power consumption.

Just as an example, an R9 3950X and reference model RTX 3080 uses around 530W under a gaming load.
