I5 compatibility

I am wondering if a intel i5-4590 will replace a intel i5-2400 cpu in a dell optiplex 990 sff. The dell works great with the 2400. I was given a 4590 for free in a few boxes of parts. I know the 2400 is a lga1155 socket and the 4590 is a lga1150 . don't know the difference.

The i5 4590 will not work in the motherboard that is currently holding the i5 2400.

The LGA 1155 vs 1150 is what is called the 'socket', which is what holds the CPU. The number in there is the amount of pins the socket has, so as you can see these CPU's aren't interchangeable in the same motherboard.

Ok now for a related question on the 2400. Is there any way to flash the bios in the optiplex 990 to allow overclocking the i5-2400. No way to do it right now.

The i5 2400 has a locked multiplier, meaning you can't do real overclocking on the CPU anyways.
