which 3000 series GPU do i need for what I want to do?

Paul_Johnson

Before i ask my question, here's my build:

CPU: https://www.newegg.com/core-i7-8th-gen-intel-core-i7-8700k/p/N82E16819117827?item=N82E16819117827

CPU COOLING:

Motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813144115?item=N82E16813144115

RAM: 64GB

GPU: https://www.newegg.com/asus-geforce-gtx-1070-ti-cerberus-gtx1070ti-a8g-gaming/p/N82E16814126231?item=9SIA0ZX7AT3555

SSD(for C drive): https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-evo-500gb/p/N82E16820147690?item=9SIA12K7968212

HDD: https://www.newegg.com/toshiba-x300-hdwe150xzsta-5tb/p/N82E16822149628?item=N82E16822149628

PSU: https://www.microcenter.com/product/621992/gskill-850-watt-80-plus-gold-atx-fully-modular-power-supply

OS: Windows 10 pro 64 bit(OEM)

...anyway, I'm using an lgcx tv for a pc monitor and I'm currently gaming at 4k, 60hz but barely, which is why I plan to upgrade to a 3000 series gpu. I want to get the 3090 but considering the price difference of the other cards, will the 3090 be overkill for what i want to do?

I want to game at 4k, 120Hz, 4-4-4, or at the very least the closest to that as i can get and have consistently high frame rates.

i know, i need to change my motherboard eventually to a pcie 4.0 motherboard but i want to see what happens if i put a 3000 series gpu in a 3.0 before spending the money to get another board and going through the trouble of taking my PC apart to install it.

Wait for all cards to launch and check how they all perform first and check if the 3090 is worth it over the 3080.

No clue wait for reviews. All we have know now is the performance of the 3080 and it's decent at 4k.

Hey @Paul_Johnson I'd like to ask which game titles are you playing "I'm currently gaming at 4k, 60hz but barely,"? is there any performance metric you can give as a reference?

At this present time, it doesn't appear any reviewer's (videos and written) have shared or included many of the referenced titles that the supposedly RTX 3080 take advantage of game titles like BF5, Minecraft, Quake 2, Autodesk Arnold etc. I do realise yes Linus & TTL of OC3D mention Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Metro Exodus, Blender and V-Ray but what is your use case?

If you follow hardware_canucks via instagram, they posted a few IG stories yesterday evening that the RTX 3080 on their bench-marking machine which I think was a X299 system with a Noctua NH-D15 the installation of the card is quite tight or doesn't fit, I can no longer view it since it's more than 24hrs old

Please become a member of the Linus Tech Tips forum, keep writing smug remarks & let us love you. Peace out.

Well i was referring to playing Halo 2 on PC on maxed out settings, 4k and hdr.

It looks AMAZING! I haven't checked the FPS yet, but at 4k, 60hz for the most part it's smooth enough to be playable, but there are moments where i get extreme studdering and sometimes the screen blinks black, especially when u first load a level. There have been at least three times in the heat of battle that the game completely crashed and i had to go back to steam and click on play again. As of today i just got frustrated and went back to 1080p i game and haven't had any issues sense. I am looking forward to experiencing ray tracing because i've seen youtube videos of halo 3 and halo 1 with RT and it looks awesome. I just RECENTLY downloaded Star Citizen and it works great in 1080p but based on the issues i had with Halo 2, anniversary edition, i'm afraid my pc will explode(proverbially) if i try 4k on star citizen. MechWarrior Online at max settings at 1080p i average 30s and 40s and sometimes 50s in the FPS.

but of course i'll be trying to run this card along side a i78700k and a motherboard with a pcie 3.0 slot. for those more technically inclined than i am, any idea what kind of problems i should expect?
