You're citing a specific example. Either link it, or it doesn't exist.

Classic. You're trying to troll me. Yeah, not happening.

Can't imagine complaining the mid-high card isn't the perfect card for absolute cutting edge enthusiast performance when they're already offering an enthusiast one next month. Not to mention it's GDDR6X, not GDDR6, so we're not even sure how well it even performs until Wednesday.

Source? Not allocation, but actual usage that isn't just a memory leak.

Something that I can't quite determine from that article is how exactly they determine how much VRAM is being utilized. If it's from any external program, then it's only measuring allocation, not usage.

For those of you that said 8gb (or 10gb for the matter) is good enough, have you thought that for the first time it could be PCs holding back consoles (on what relates to textures, and all the shit that requires loads of VRAM, not raw power)?

To me, it makes zero sense to buy any of these new cards, unless you are doing professional rendering and need the 3090, which comes at a great price if considered the RTX Titan's cost. Once the cards with 16gb and 20gb VRAM come out (allegedly), then it's time to buy. Anyone out there with similar thoughts?

Agreed, but that's a non-issue for games, I guess. Nvidia gimps on vram for their consumer cards in order to make their prosumers go for the Titan or Quadro cards.

I'd be more than happy to have a GPU with more vram than my current 2060S, 8gb ain't enough for me (heck, even 16gb is barely doable).

Size doesn't matter, just the amounts of pixels you are driving. I think they were Resident Evil 2, FFXV and another one that I can't remember. It's been a while since I pushed the VRAM to the limit, but the point is that it has already happened.

90% of games do not report VRAM usage either at all, properly or as usage period. Most report VRAM allocation as usage and before you say task manager shows x amount VRAM usage it's getting that number from the game.

It's getting that from allocation, not actual usage. Allocation can be detected from outside the program using the VRAM, but actual usage can only be detected from inside the program that's allocating it.

The one thing that kind of gives me pause re. the 3080 is the amount of VRAM. I'm not thrilled that it doesn't have a little more than it does. If I had a higher spec CPU I might be tempted to wait for the refresh, to see if they had more memory but I'm buying mainly to play older games in 3D. I need frames more than I need memory at this point.

From these benchmarks showing VRAM alocation it seems that a few games are getting close to the 10GB limit. Not sure if that's due to bad optimisation or some other anomaly but it would be nice to have a little more overhead. Also it seems dependant on the specific card as to whether or not more or less VRAM is necessary (looking at the 3070) so it seems the 3080 could make more efficient use of the memory?

As for how the new consoles are going to effect a potential rise in VRAM allocation, I guess it remains to be seen but the new consoled have 16GB total. Compare that to the total a gamer might have in their PC with a 3080 installed: 26GB (16GB system memory + 10GB VRAM) ...It'll probably be okay for the majority of games for at least this cycle, but it would have been nice to have some overhead.

Edit: Sorry, screwed up the figures. Just put them right.
