How often do people usually upgrade gpu?

Rdpruitt

Most every 2-3 years, I wouldn’t say that you should upgrade this often however as it depends how you use your PC and how much you are willing to spend.

I would say change when your experience isn’t what you want, not specifications.

When the need and money are big enough. Which is why last upgrade I did was 2017 for 780 Founders. I don't really need more GPU power, CPU upgrade is kinda more pressing since I would love to have more rendering power.

Every release, so that way you get the most back when you sell your old card. Lose about 25 % or so if you sell right when there's an official announcement that new cards are coming, but sell before the new cards are actually revealed. Otherwise, once they are officially revealed, lose about 50 %. Wait another generation and loose 75 % of your initial purchase price of the card. Higher end cards sell when the new generation comes out. How many people do you know are buying RTX 2060, RTX 2060 Super, RTX 2070, RTX 2070 Super, RTX 2080, RTX 2080 Super? Not many. People are buying up RTX 2080 Ti, and RTX Titan while they are cheap because the newer cards have been revealed. So if you buy the enthusiast level card, you will have a larger pool of possible buyers when you go to sell. The enthusiast cards are now the only cards that have SLI support. So imagine this. You have a RTX 2080 Ti in your system right now, new cards are revealed, I can get about same performance of the newer cards, by getting another RTX 2080 Ti for very cheap, less than an RTX 3070 about, and put them in SLI and probably get RTX 3080 level of performance, but at $500 instead of $800. That's why enthusiast cards have a larger pool of buyers when new cards get revealed. I would imagine this will be the case with the RTX 3090, it's the only card that supports SLI now. So when the RTX 4XXX series is revealed, there will be a lot of people buying up RTX 3090 that already have a RTX 3090 to put them in SLI.

I’m seeing all these people saying that’s it’s time to upgrade their 1060s/1080s to a 20 or 30 series card, while I’m sitting here, having upgraded my only pc from an AMD 5570 to a 2080 ti last year 😂 of course that’s an extreme, but I don’t think every generation or every other generation is worth upgrading from. How often do you guys upgrade?

I usually work most with cloud stuff paying for GPUs by the hour.

Once I see that the value of having a GPU in my desktop for some quick prototyping offsets the value of renting a GPU for 1~2 months, then I buy one that enables me to do some basic stuff.

My plan for now is to buy an used 2080ti when people start to get rid of it in favor of the 3070, it'll sit along nicely to my current 2060 Super :P

Well I built my computer only last year but when I did I found a $80 R9 Fury X to put in it and I don't plan to upgrade for a while, as long as I get 720p 60fps I'm happy

550Ti still running, beat ya. 👌

Maybe will upgrade once we see what Nvidia does with the 50 and 60 cards for 3000 series. Was thinking of just getting a RX 470 or 480 during Black Friday since those are the kinds of value for money on the entry side. But with how good the 3070 is supposed to be, really intrigued how the 3060 and even 3050 will perform.

Well, technically, my card never gave out😁 it was just super slow. Triple A games at 720 low could maybe, maybe, get upper teen, lower 20 fps. The worst part was when I bought big games like monster hunter world when they went on sale, knowing full well I couldn’t play it until I got a better gpu. Had that in my library for months before I could play it

edit: and your 550 ti was way more than double the performance of my 5570. So take that. My card sucked more

Personally, I only upgrade when I'm not satisifed with my GPU's performance.

This. My upgrade path has been: x1650 Pro -> 9800 GT -> HD 5770 -> GTX 670 -> GTX 980. My 980 is lacking in modern games at 1440p, so will be choosing something to upgrade to once Big Navi launches and any potential Nvidia responses which will give a wide range of cards to choose from.

Zen 3 Daily Rig (2022 - Present): AMD Ryzen 9 5900X + Optimus Foundations AM4 | Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti FE + Alphacool Eisblock 3080 FE | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB DDR4-3600 (@3733 c14) | ASUS Crosshair VIII Dark Hero | 2x Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB | Crucial MX500 1TB | Corsair RM1000x | Lian Li O11 Dynamic | LG 48" C1 | EK Quantum Kinetic TBE 200 w/ D5 | HWLabs GTX360 and GTS360 | Bitspower True Brass 14mm | Corsair 14mm White PMMA | ModMyMods Mod Water Clear | 9x BeQuiet Silent Wings 3 120mm PWM High Speed | Aquacomputer Highflow NEXT | Aquacomputer Octo

The only monitor upgrade I've gotten in 10 years was going from 1x1080p60Hz to 2x1080p (144Hz and 60Hz) and honestly I believe GPUs can last quite a long time if you're willing to tune down some settings a bit and keep resolutions reasonable.

It surprises me every time I see a modern game running on something like a 7970. Honestly, incredible value of a card that's still holding up decently if you're not looking to max out the newer games.

I admit to unnecessary upgrades tho... It went smth like this... HD4430 -> HD 6670 -> GTX 760 -> GTX 580 (760 went bad and I got a good deal on the 580 used) -> 280x -> RX 470 -> Dual RX 470s (Jesus this was a bad idea) -> RX 470 -> Vega56. I almost guarantee the 470 would've been good for years to come at 1080p and I'll have to do a system rebuild for the next upgrade anyways (Bottlenecking already...)

My Rig: AMD Ryzen 5800x3D | Scythe Fuma 2 | RX6600XT Red Devil | B550M Steel Legend | Fury Renegade 32GB 3600MTs | 980 Pro Gen4 - RAID0 - Kingston A400 480GB x2 RAID1 - Seagate Barracuda 1TB x2 | Fractal Design Integra M 650W | InWin 103 | Mic. - SM57 | Headphones - Sony MDR-1A | Keyboard - Roccat Vulcan 100 AIMO | Mouse - Steelseries Rival 310 | Monitor - Dell S3422DWG

I got a new card from every series since the 700s. I thought the 2080 Ti would be good for a good while, but I saw my fps at constant 40-50 (30 in exceptional cases) on Marvel Avengers...so whenever the 3080 Ti shows up I might be going for it. Been playing mostly AAA games on the last 2 or 3 years at 4k or 1440p ultrawide.
